Pichon comes from a family of academics in the historic city of Nancy, France, where children were encouraged to achieve bests in math, science and engineering. Her early participation in sponsored competitions for programmers led her to join the Army at the age of sixteen. Her talent, especially in robotics, attracted widespread attention almost immediately. Her superiors quickly encouraged Pichon to study engineering alongside her military career. From the beginning, Pichon became increasingly dedicated to adaptive technology that supports soldiers in the field. Her technological achievements have already generated a lot of buzz, but her exceptional skills as a tactician and quick and efficient problem solver make her invaluable to any operation. Her unique combination of skills made Pichon a natural fit for the GIGN and subsequently Rainbow. She is fluent in French, English and German. Her current area of research is AI.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

Before joining Rainbow, I was unfamiliar with the term “technological creative.” But according to the mission reports of special operations officer Emmanuelle “Twitch” Pichon, it’s the term that best describes her. Of course, it doesn’t cover her personality in its entirety. Pichon is much deeper than one might think, and always good for a surprise.

There is a kind of academic competition between Pichon and her sister, a physicist, but as she assures me, it is not serious. Rather, it is typical of the perfection that parents have instilled in their children. Her father told her to strive every day to achieve incredible things so that it would reverberate in the universe. You hear nothing but good things about her from the Rainbow team – both in terms of her professional and social skills. Special Operations Officer Gustave “Doc” Kateb, in particular, appreciates her intuition and empathy. Others, like special operations officer Olivier “Lion” Flament, praise her technological expertise.

I wanted to know from Pichon how she interprets “technological creativity.” She said she sees things differently than others, but is always fully aware of it. So “philosopher” could well be added to the multitude of buzzwords that are supposed to describe her personality.

She is a very pragmatic researcher. The way she approaches a robot and interacts with it like other people do with a child or pet is a testament to her inherent compassion. Pichon is currently looking at ways to teach empathy to AI so that it can then teach it back to humans. I’d like to look more closely at this topic, so I’m planning a visit to the lab.

Pichon’s passion for technology that improves the quality of people’s lives drives her research and military career, but I wonder if she is sometimes too idealistic. She is an excellent operator and has many other skills besides her gift for technology. I want to make her realize in which situations the human factor is essential.

Because of her background, past, and interest in AI, people-watching is one of her favorite things to do. Whether she’s in a restaurant or on a bus, she likes to seek out places where there are a lot of people and study their behavior. She is also passionate about travel. The list of places she hasn’t been is shorter than those she already knows.
