In League of Legends, coach cvMax’s legendary team “Griffin” plays a special role. Starting from 2017, the coach formed a strong team from some talents that no one knew and brought them to the Worlds 2019. But the team Griffin broke at the end of 2019 because of a scandal. 2 years later, 5 players from Griffin dominate the LoL scene in Asia.
This is the special Griffin:
- South Korean team Griffin played in the 2nd Korean League in 2017 and chose an unusual path. They entrusted the team’s fate to an outsider: coach Kim “ccMax” Dae-ho (now 32). He had no experience as a former LoL pro.
- cvMax recruited 5 virtually unknown players for the team from 2017 at once, who are now between 21 and 23 years old. When they joined Griffin, they were teenagers. cvMax signed young players from the solo cue or streamer in whom he saw potential, and then molded them with apparently extremely hard training.
- Although the team failed after three years due to a scandal, all 5 players now have extreme success and are mega stars in Asia. 3 of them have just become champions in the LCK, and a 4th has even made it to key player on the world champion team EDward Gaming.
Team makes it from 2nd league to 5th at Worlds in 3 years
This was the rise of Team Griffin: Team Griffin rose from the second division to the top of South Korea in 3 years and even made it to the 2019 World Cup.
It was only because the team was extremely young and had an Achilles heel in the lineup in top laner Sword that it didn’t make it all the way to the top: Team Griffin lost a total of 3 final games in South Korea in 2018 and 2019: 2 times to T1, once to KT-Rolster.
At Worlds 2019, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Invictus Gaming, finishing only 5th-8th, with the Chinese mercilessly exploiting the weakness in the South Korean team: Top laner Sword became a victim of TheShy, who is considered one of the best top laners in the world.
Nevertheless, the team made news in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and was considered the hottest topic for the future of League of Legends.
In Griffin’s rise to prominence, the young midlaner Chovy (cover photo) in particular was already making history and was considered it one of the world’s greatest talents. Once he turned 18 and was able to play in the LCK, he immediately looked like the best player in the league.

Scandal over player contracts and a coach choking players end highs
That was the downfall of Team Griffin: Before and during the 2019 Worlds, a scandal broke out at Team Griffin:
In the end, the team was broken, just when they had reached their peak with the participation in the Worlds.
Here cvMax hugs the top laner Sword – but he is also said to have choked him.
3 Griffin players become champions, finish off T1 3-0
Where do the 5 players stand now? In 2022, 3 players from Team Griffin have joined “Gen G.”.
All 3 became champions in South Korea for the first time this weekend. They beat the “big” T1 in the finals of the LCK and did so 3-0, so that was a thrashing. This should make Gen G. the top favorite to win the 2022 Worlds.
The “eternal losers” who lost the finals to SKT1 4 years ago are now the kings of South Korea.
By the way: Faker actually played Renekton in midlane in Game 2 and lost 1-5-0 to Chovy with Sylas (9-0-5). Thereby Renekton already had a really bad day in the pro leagues before.
Team Griffin’s former ADC, Viper, has gone even a little higher. He won the 2021 World Championship with EDward Gaming and is considered one of the best LoL players around.
Jungler Tarzan (23) is now the franchise player of LNG Esports after 3 years with Griffin and is considered one of the best junglers worldwide.
The 5 talents that cvMax discovered from 2017 are among the best players in the world in 2022. cvMax proved to have an incredible nose for talent.
Miracle coach was banned for life, then pardoned – Now without a team.
What is the miracle coach doing today? cvMax has had a tough time. He was banned for life for strangling a player, but then pardoned after 20,000 fans spoke up for him.
Until 2021, he coached the Korean team DRX. There, after the end of Griffin, two of his protégés had followed him: Chovy and Doran. This team also led cvMax to the world championship. But after that, this team also disbanded. Doran and Chovy played for separate teams in 2020, until they met again at Gen G. from 2021, where things went so outstandingly for them.
But nothing worked out at DRX without the two stars in 2021, and coach cvMax was fired on November 15 (via inven).
Since then, he no longer has a pro job in LoL.
cvMax signs 3 of the best players of their generation and now has none of it
Here’s what’s behind it: It’s incredible what an eye for talent cvMax showed a few years ago. Just discovering Chovy alone would be quite an accomplishment. After all, this could be one of the best LoL players of all time.
But to find two more candidates for the “Top 5” at the same time with Viper and Tarzan and two more key players with Doran and Lehens is quite unusual.
This also explains that the players, after the collapse, of Griffin showed some loyalty to cvMax: Doran and Chovy both moved with him to Dragon X.
It’s a shame that cvMax can’t capitalize on that success now. But strangling a player now doesn’t exactly qualify him to coach a pro team either:
