What’s going on with CoD ? The publisher behind the “Call of Duty” series Activision-Blizzard announced on January 24 that they are starting a close collaboration with Google.

For Google, this is probably primarily about moving the e-sports events of Overwatch or even Call of Duty from the streaming platform Twitch to YouTube. Here, Google wants to grow further and become successful not only with videos, but also with streams.

But we gamers could also benefit from this collaboration. After all, the quality of the netcode and the servers could improve significantly with the migration of the multiplayer servers to the Google cloud.

Activision-Blizzard announced that in the future the multiplayer servers will be organized through the Google Cloud.

Better servers through Google Cloud, but why?

What could be better about servers? Currently, Activision-Blizzard uses multiple providers/providers for its multiplayer server infrastructure. This potentially drives up costs, as the publisher currently prefers to organize private matches through the management of a player host.

With the switch, that could change, although the current CoD: Modern Warfare is unlikely to benefit from it. But that would not be the only advantage. Possible would also be:

• AI-controlled server
• Less packet loss
• Regional choices
• Private dedicated server

The quality of the servers could be much better with this.

AI anticipates the actions on the servers

What do AI-controlled servers bring? Google AI makes games smoother, as the system can anticipate certain behavior patterns, improving overall computation.

Google has huge computing capacities. These capacities help the AI to analyze certain gameplay patterns and subsequently understand the patterns behind them. This can greatly improve server quality.

For example, if you start a match and sprint right off, the AI can anticipate that action and calculate it already on the server. If the system notices that you are actually performing the pre-calculated action, the data can be transferred to the server faster because the calculation is already complete. If you do something else, the action will be recalculated and will arrive at the server at normal speed.

More server options, better connection – Google promises all this with the change.

How does less packet loss improve the game? When fewer packets are lost on the way from the player to the server and back, lags or skipped inputs are less likely to occur.

Even with a good Internet connection, it can happen that data packets are lost and thus important information does not reach the server. Then you sometimes see players who are not running continuously but “lying” or a fire command was not recognized by the game and you wonder why there is no shot of you in the kill cam.

This point goes hand in hand with point one, as the AI tries to guess these data packets. Through the system, certain packets can be replaced by the AI. According to Google, with the change, packet loss would be reduced and the latency of the server would become smaller.

If the private servers also go to the Google cloud, no more super bullets either.

Quality of regional and private servers could get better

What do regional choices do? This option allows you to choose the best server available in your region.

In many online games this is considered standard, but not in Call of Duty. You are automatically assigned to a server and have no option to change it. The new options are especially interesting for us Europeans, because there are usually several servers in a relatively small space, including Google.

There are only advantages to moving to Google Cloud, right?

Why private dedicated servers? The current speeds are way too low for professional players. So far, most private games are organized through a player host and the netcode processes the information between players at a speed of 12 hertz.

This is far too slow for e-sports, clan wars, or private events, and Modern Warfare is so not ready for e-sports. The RAM-7, for example, comes with a fire rate of 882 bullets/minute and thus theoretically shoots at a frequency of 14.7 Hertz. Thus, it can happen that you fire 2 bullets within a refresh window, which then arrives at the opponent as a super bullet.

The servers of the normal multiplayer run at just under 60 hertz, that is 60 updates per second; Ground War rather at 20 – 30 hertz. If these rates were also available for the private matches, it would be a real upgrade of this feature.

But for some, this is the super-GAU, as they are afraid of giving away even more data to Google.

The data ends up at Google

Even though it all sounds great, for many a gamer there’s a catch to it – The hardworking data collectors at Google.

What’s the problem? Depending on which of the server functions are handed over to Google, the AI could affect many areas of the game. This starts with match-making and then moves on to personal offers to increase sales of in-game items.

But what the new server infrastructure will look like on Google servers remains to be seen. Server AI are a very interesting but somewhat controversial technology.

Activision-Blizzard should pay close attention to the players’ reactions here and inform them well, otherwise the next shitstorm will be just around the corner.
