FIFA 22 saves a boring tutorial and offers emotions instead.

FIFA 22 doesn’t start with a ball and a lawn, but with a coffee and a croissant. The story campaigns of the last parts around Alex Hunter honestly couldn’t pick me up, but the intro of the current offshoot even more so.

If you’re just getting into FIFA 22, or if you skipped the opening sequence for whatever reason, you should definitely check it out. Because with the approximately 30-minute sequence EA Sports has finally looked outside the box and given us an interesting insight into the world of soccer.

This awaits you in the crazy story intro of FIFA 22

Coffee and croissant are part of David Beckham’s breakfast as he sits on the balcony of a Paris hotel. The camera pans down to a room. Here you create an avatar and give him a chic outfit. Then it’s down to the street, where the French freestyler Lisa Zimouche is already waiting to explain the controls of FIFA 22 to you.

Together with the soccer artist you dribble through the streets of Paris until you reach the stadium of Paris St. Germain. Here you’ll get to do some practice sessions with Kylian Mbappé and Thierry Henry. Then comes what you probably expected to be the intro: a soccer match. Paris and Chelsea meet in the Champions League. Now you can finally put the skills you’ve learned into practice.

Probably the story intro won’t make anyone go into complete euphoria or convert soccer fans, but at least EA tries a slightly different approach here, which also tries to catch the trappings around the turf. The sequence is only available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, though.

Fresh wind offers beside the intro finally also a Crossplay feature, which permits you an interaction on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Initially, however, EA is only initiating a test phase here, which is limited to a few game modes. If this is satisfactory, the function could be expanded and implemented in FIFA 23 from the beginning.
