Teams and players in eSports that win multiple titles in their discipline always exhibit one quality above all others: they win when it counts. Team Spirit, surprising winner at The International 10 and thus reigning “Dota 2” world champion, personifies this principle.

At the PGL Arlington Major, which ended on August 14, 2022, the Ukrainian-Russian team took the title and the winner’s purse, filled with around 200,000 euros, despite not entering the final as the favorite – in fact, the odds were actually anything but good.

The Spirit Trauma of PSG.LGD

The final opponent, the Chinese team PSG.LGD, in fact, had dominated the tournament until then, sending Spirit to the lower bracket earlier with a solid 2-0 win. In the entire competition, the top team only had to concede two games. However, when it came down to it, the team’s nerves failed them – as they had in the final of The International 10 (TI10) 2021.

Team Spirit and PSG.LGD have met in twelve series in tournaments so far, with the Chinese winning ten times. However, in the two all-important finals series, of all things, the winner ended up being Team Spirit – that can be called efficiency. For LGD, however, it has taken on the character of a trauma. Fans mordantly remarked after the decision that PSG.LGD may be the best team in the world, but this is only true for 364 days a year. The pros probably hope that statement is true – because that would mean they’ve already put the annual surprise loss in a major tournament final behind them and can easily sail to the title at TI11 in October.

Dramatic game 2 was decisive

In Arlington, the second game of the best-of-5 series most likely proved decisive: in an incredibly exciting match with several dramatic twists and turns and half an hour of non-stop action, you could literally see Spirit completely breaking the fighting spirit of its opponents. To give you an idea of how close the match was without giving away the details, let this fact roll off your tongue: After just under 70 minutes of play, the Dota Plus analysis tool still estimated the win probabilities of both sides at 50 percent.

TI11 invitations are fixed

The Major in Arlington decided the remaining open direct invitations to the TI11 in Singapore. This dozen of teams have already firmly qualified for the annual final via the global ranking:
