Nationality is actually quite unimportant in “StarCraft 2” – but in the NationWars series, unofficial national teams compete to win glory for their countries. Germany was nominally always one of the most promising countries, but was heavily disadvantaged due to the format, as the strength of the entire team was less important. Instead, the focus was mostly on individual players. Two top four finishes (2014 and 2017) are the best German results, in the past two editions (2018 and 2019) it was only enough for a place among the best eight teams.
Now NationWars returns after a long hiatus, bringing with it an all-new format that reduces the national teams to just two professionals. For Germany, Gabriel “HeroMarine” Segat and Julian “Lambo“Brosig. The former was elected by fan vote, the latter prevailed in a duel against Tobias “ShoWTimE” Sieber through to win the place in the team.
The German duo can expect chances for a good placing, as “HeroMarine” and “Lambo” are currently in good shape, as the recent DH-SC2 Masters results show. However, the national team has some tough tasks ahead of them, as the group draw has shown.
NationWars 7: Groups
Group A
- Germany vs. Poland
- Finland vs. Peace
In Poland and Finland, Germany faces two nations that have historically done better in NationWars – Finland is the reigning defending champion. While the Nordic country doesn’t boast the broad quality of players that Germany does, the focus on individual performances in past editions meant that exceptional talent Joona “Serral” Sotala was able to single-handedly lead his country to the top. Certainly an impressive feat, but it somewhat contradicts the team concept of the competition.
Poland, much like Germany, has always been able to draw on a wide array of talent and often performed better in the competition as a result, reaching the final in 2017, for example. The fourth team in Group A, consisting of two Russian players, will appear under the Peace banner at its own request.
This is how the rest of the groups of the tournament look like:
Group B
- Italy vs. Ukraine
- USA vs. Netherlands
Group C
- South Korea vs. Canada
- Mexico vs. India
Group D
- China vs. Brazil
- France vs. Denmark
This year’s format also features 2-against-2 matches in addition to regular 1-against-1 matches – this represents a major unknown as professionals rarely compete in this mode. It will be a tough job for Germany to advance from Group A, but if “HeroMarine” and “Lambo” can maintain their strong form, it should be possible to punch their ticket to the next round. Exact dates for the games have not yet been set, but the final of the tournament is scheduled for July 16, 2022 – it will take place in the French capital Paris.
