BACKGROUND

“Whether in the air or on the ground – you either find your balance or you end up in the dirt.”

Born in the Nakoda Territory of Saskatchewan, Thunderbird learned the value of community from her mother at an early age. Sitting on her father’s lap, she made her first experiences with engines. It was also him who taught her everything there was to know about helicopters before she learned to fly one herself.

Looking for new experiences, she signed up for the Bold Eagle Program at the age of seventeen, where she completed basic military training with flying colors. Led by community elders and local educators, the program awakened in her a desire to protect and preserve what she loved most: the Nakoda way of life.

After joining the Canadian Armed Forces, Thunderbird went through flight school. As she did so, she remembered what her mother had taught her about balance. Since the CAF taught her to take lives, she came to the conclusion that she should learn to save them as well. She completed basic medical training (CFHSTC) and then served as an air medic in the CAF.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

When Nomad first brought Specialist Mina “Thunderbird” Sky to our attention, I wasn’t surprised at her recommendation. Sky is an able medical officer, aircraft mechanic and pilot. She seems to have the motivation, training, and attitude needed to fit well into Nomad’s team. But I was surprised that I had never heard of her before.

Without Sky’s medical training, Nomad might not have survived the northern incident. I wonder if that encounter inspired Nomad to seek friendship with a hunter like Specialist Frost. Given their backgrounds, Frost and Sky probably have a lot in common. Family is very important to Sky, and that goes beyond blood relations. The Nakoda community shaped and raised Sky just as much as her parents. The knowledge passed on is not just history, but a legacy that is practiced and preserved as a way of life.

Overall, Sky has an emotional awareness that comes from understanding and acceptance. She strives for balance in everything she does. She sees the world and the human body as a motor. First you have to understand its purpose, then how it works. When a cable snaps, a screw can’t fix it, but a screw can hold a bone in place while it heals. A very interesting analogy – listen first, then find a solution. But that doesn’t mean she never loses patience. What “gets under your skin,” as Sky puts it, is disrespect. Respect for others, whether for their way of life or their right to life, is one of their most important principles.

Sky seems to rely on their confidence and experience when assessing risk. After discussing some of their more dangerous adventures, I was a bit concerned about their daring tactics. I asked her what it feels like to be in the air and if it’s the adrenaline rush that drives her. She just smiled and said, “It feels like I’m flying.” I guess I deserved that…
