BACKGROUND

“Deep down, there was a desire to travel. And having travelled, I want to travel much further.”

Coming from a rich Moroccan family, Sanaa El Maktoub traveled a lot in Europe and Northern Europe as a child. She dreamed of adventures in distant lands. She enlisted in the military at 19, only to later join the Groupe d’Intervention de La Gendarmerie Royale (GIGR) after graduating from the legendary fort. She served 4 years in the Mountain Infantry Battalion, participated in flintlock exercises and joined Trans-Saharan Counterterrorism Initiative missions. She became an expert in operations in special environmental environments in her unit.

Between assignments, she embarks on solo expeditions. El Maktoub is one of the few explorers who can cross the Sahara, climb the Alps, trek through Asian rainforests and march in the Arctic Circle, and then return to his unit fully operational. Whether in sun or rain, in the desert or in the perpetual ice, it gets ahead everywhere. A survivalist as perceptive as she is resourceful, she sketches her travels in her notebook.

Specialist Sanaa El Maktoub is always on the move, hence her codename “Nomad”. She only stands still while making notes in her notebook and when she injured her hand. […] Her higher upbringing imbued her with an individual pursuit of success that made her want to scale mountains and master natural terrain unknown to her parents. She was probably told as a child that she was too soft. An accusation that she has been trying to refute ever since. In doing so, she became a world-class expert in extreme environments whose reputation precedes her.

Specialist El Maktoub has unparalleled resilience to the forces of nature, and is renowned in military circles for her toughness. In fact, I came across the name of Specialist El Maktoub in a research paper assessing military fitness.

No doubt she is invaluable to the GIGR. While she claims that experience can teach anyone her survival and planning skills, she speaks with genuine humility. She would never think of bragging about anything. She seems downright uncomfortable talking about her own accomplishments. In any case, she never chooses the easy way … instead of taking photos, she prefers to draw. To be honest, I envy their drive.

When she was stationed at the fort early in her military career, she underwent extensive training under the guidance of Specialist Jalal El Fassi. It would be fascinating to see them back together in a team under different circumstances.

During her expeditions she encountered a number of reclusive groups, such as the Maasai in Kenya and the Nenets in Siberia. In this way, she acquired diplomatic skills in dealing with foreign cultures. While Rainbow Six recruits special forces from around the world, none of them have seen as much of the world as they have. And yet she still wants to be the first woman to cross Antarctica on foot alone. No doubt she’s capable of it, but hopefully she won’t lose any more limbs in the process. I’m afraid she’ll take such injuries as a badge of honor and proof that she’s not a spoiled rich brat.
