Activision has big plans with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the latest installment in the long-running series, which will launch this fall. The title is meant to usher in “CoD 2.0,” a new era for the franchise. An important pillar for this endeavor is the new “DMZ” mode. This is a PvPvE game variant based on titles like Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown.
DMZ is part of CoD Modern Warfare 2
This is what it’s about: There have been rumors about Call of Duty and the term “DMZ” for quite some time. But what is behind it? Originally, it was said that it could be a new Free2Play title. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Instead, the term apparently refers to a new game mode in CoD Modern Warfare 2, in which you compete simultaneously against bots and other teams while trying to solve various tasks.
The rumors have now been confirmed by CharlieIntel with a photo that was originally leaked by an NFL Rams player. The team had the opportunity to play Modern Warfare 2 in advance.
What’s new: You can see the aesthetics of MW2 with the neon green stripes and the lettering “DMZ”. On Twitter, many comments theorize that these could be deliberate leaks by Activision to clear up the false rumors about a second Free2Play CoD next to Warzone.
This is how the gameplay of DMZ works
Game mechanics, as we know them from Escape from Tarkov, are currently very popular. Alone or with others in a team, you fight against the AI and other players. You’ll get loot from chests or from fallen enemies – but you’ll also lose your equipment when you die. The objective is to complete a series of tasks and escape from the area.

The special thing about a PvPvE mode is that each team has different goals and it is not (only) about recording as many kills as possible. Tactical and careful actions play a more important role here than in most other game variants.
Besides DMZ, several game modes, maps and more have already been leaked. Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
