IEM Cologne 2022 – Format

The IEM in Cologne will be held in three stages:

  • Play-in phase: July 5-6, 2022
  • Group stage: July 7-10, 2022
  • Play-offs: July 15 – 17, 2022

Sixteen of the event’s 24 teams will compete in the play-in stage to determine the eight teams that will be allowed to join the quintet already qualified for it in the group stage. Opening games are best-of-1 matches, after which the best-of-3 format takes over.

This consists of two groups of eight teams each and, just like the play-in phase, is played in the form of double-elimination brackets, with three teams each advancing to the final round. All games in this phase are played in a best-of-3 format.

The final round will switch to a single-elimination bracket, with the best-of-3 format continuing to be the choice for all series except the final – here fans can expect an extended best-of-5 series.

While play-ins and groups will take place at the luxury Hyatt Regency Cologne hotel, the play-offs will rise in front of a live audience at Cologne’s Lanxess Arena.
