The upcoming “God of War: Ragnarok” is to expand the combat system of its predecessor even more. With new weapons and moves, players should be able to literally play with their opponents.
Lead combat designers Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh come to more than 17 years of combined experience with the “God of War” series. Now, they spoke with Game Informer colleagues about the combat system and direction of the current games, which are said to be inspired by an old Santa Monica Studio motto: Play with your food.
New equipment and moves should be able to be used creatively
“That’s an internal philosophy we’ve had since the beginning,” Sheth told us. “Kratos plays with his food. We’ve tried to create systems that people want to engage with, that are fun, very playful, and offer a lot of different paths. And when we looked at the combat in the last game, we thought: We can take this even further; we can find new toys and ways to play with enemies and strategies. That, more than anything, was the guiding principle.”
Those who played the predecessor of “God of War: Ragnarok” will have to get used to an innovation, for better or worse. While in “God of War” the triangle button was used to call up the axe, in the upcoming game “Weapon Signature Moves” are performed. Kratos can now infuse his Chaos Blades or Leviathan Axe with ice or fire to perform elemental attacks. The Frost Awaken and Whiplash moves deal additional damage by freezing or burning attackers.
More news on God of War: Ragnarok:
It was already known that also the Shield will be provided with new moves. Kratos gets two new shields, Dauntless and Stonewall. The Dauntless shield is geared towards lightning-fast reactions and, if you parry at the last moment, can deliver a devastating blow that knocks enemies down and stuns them. The Stonewall shield, on the other hand, is a real tank and is oriented towards slower and strategic fights. With it, Kratos can’t parry, but the shield absorbs kinetic energy when it absorbs hits. Once Stonewall is fully charged, Kratos can ram it into the ground and send out a screen-filling pulse that knocks enemies over.
