Team Aster is a professional Chinese esports organization. It was developed by legendary Chinese player BurNIng and is best known for its Dota 2 division.
First impression
For the first time, the intentions to create BurNIng’s own organization were revealed back in 2017-2018. However, the full implementation of the idea took place in September 2018, when the first cast was announced, which consisted of the stars of the Chinese scene:
- Sylar
- Dstones
- Xxs
- BoBoKa
- Fenrir
The first test for the newly formed team was their performance in the qualifiers for The Kuala Lumpur Major China. The team passed the open qualifiers without any problems and later finished 3rd in the closed qualifiers, which allowed the team to qualify for the Major itself.
On the rise, Aster won the opening qualifiers for ESL One Hamburg 2018 and placed 2nd in the World Electronic Sports Games 2018 China Finals. After that, the team also won the closed qualifiers for ESL One Hamburg 2018.
In Hamburg, Aster finished 5th-6th, which was a good result, however, but clearly insufficient for such an ambitious club. However, the main test was ahead.
In November 2018, Aster played in the first major tournament in the history of the newly formed organization. The debut turned out to be an absolute failure and Aster finished 13th to 16th there.
Obviously, this result led to changes in the lineup: Dstones went to the bench and love you took his place.
With a renewed squad, Aster played in the 10th H-Cup – Season where they finished 5th-6th, won the Chongqinq Major qualifier, finished 7th-8th in the 2018 S2 Dota2 Professional League, won the 11th H-Cup – Season , and later finished 5th-6th again in the 12th – Season of the H-Cup.
Although the end of the first – Season turned out to be chaotic, reaching the major blocked all the not very successful results.
The 2019 – Season for Aster began with an appearance in the Chongqinq Major. However, it started absolutely disastrous: the team repeated the results of The Kuala Lumpur Major and finished 13th-16th in the home championship.
Obviously, such a performance brought changes within the composition. Mushi joined the team, replacing loveyouloveme.
However, the arrival of an experienced player was insufficient. Aster finished 3rd in the StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor qualifiers and had to settle for 7th-8th place at ESL One Katowice 2019 in late February.
The highlight of the failure was the 21st to 24th place at the World Electronic Sports Games 2018. After that, the reshuffle in Aster started again, with Sylar and Fenrir becoming active, and Hmx and Q taking the deputies. Later, J and ChYuan were signed for a trial period.
In the transformed list, Aster tried to reach the top of the Chinese region and become a world-class team. However, they turned out poorly, to say the least.
The team failed to qualify for MDL Disneyland Paris Major, ESL One Birmingham 2019, and OGA Dota PIT Minor 2019.
Later, enlightenment came in the form of third place at the Betway Dota 2 Asia League – Season 1 minor tournament, but that was quickly replaced by another failure. This time it was 5th place in the EPICENTER Major qualifier and 5th-6th place in the StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor – Season 2 qualifier.
In the summer, Aster pulled itself together. The team won the first – Season of the Asian Masters League in June and finished 3rd at the ZBT Invitational and ESL One Hamburg 2019.
Although Aster failed to qualify for The International, the team finished 1st in the MDL Chengdu Major qualifier and 2nd in the Hainan Master Cup. However, Aster was still unlucky in the Major tournament. In MDL Chengdu Major, the team finished 9th to 12th, which although it was the best result for all majors, it could not be called a full success. However, the performance might have been influenced by the previous replacements where Sccc and Fade joined the band and J and Fenrir left.
By the end of 2019, Aster qualified for another major tournament, this time for DreamLeague – Season 13. The team also reached the TOP 4 of the 2019 Wolrd Electronic Sports Games in China and finished 9th-10th Singapore at the ONE Esports Dota 2 World Pro Invitational.

Dota 2
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena title from Valve. The successor to the extremely popular Warcraft 3 modification DotA (Defense of the Ancients), Dota 2 was the company’s first strategy game and was released on the download platform Steam on July 9, 2013. The game is a free-to-play title that can be played completely free of charge and is financed through in-game microtransactions, similar to Team Fortress 2.
Dota 2 is – unlike other big MOBA titles like League of Legends – free to play with all heroes. However, game items can be purchased in the Dota 2 store, but all of them have no effect on the gameplay. Only cosmetic items like different skins for the heroes can be purchased. Just like in Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Portal 2, it is possible to create your own content via the Steam Workshop.
