Officially, we still know very little about the new Call of Duty: 2022. It’s called Modern Warfare 2, familiar characters are involved and it celebrates its release on October 28. However, if you take the leaks into account, things look different. You can find information about the setting, beta test, game modes and possible content here.

CoD 2022 / Modern Warfare 2 is still months away, but there are already many leaks, info bites and rumors about the new Call of Duty. Even the first official teasers are already online. Like a crazy action with huge freighters, where the artwork was presented:

• CoD 2022 will be Modern Warfare 2 and will be released on October 28.
• The developers have confirmed that it is a sequel to CoD MW 2019
• Activision studio Infinity Ward is leading the development
• The big reveal with a first trailer could drop in early June
• It will probably be the last CoD on the old consoles (PS4, Xbox One).
• There is again a collaboration with Warzone, possibly even directly Warzone 2
• Co-op mode probably DMZ – could be based on “Escape from Tarkov
• The multiplayer should probably benefit from many map remakes
• With CoD 2023 likely to be cancelled, CoD 2022 will be the biggest title in the series so far

Please note: There is very little official info on CoD 2022 so far. Most of the stuff in the article is based on what supposed insiders, dataminers, or leaks that have been leaked to the outside world. Also, the release is still a while away and things can change during development.

So take the info with some skepticism. As soon as there are new details or official info, we’ll update the article accordingly.

CoD MW2 2022: Release, Reveal, Developer, Platforms

When is Modern Warfare 2 coming? The release date is October 28.

When will CoD 2022 be unveiled? The Reveal with the first real trailer and a lot of official info has no date yet. Leaks expect the reveal in early June, before the Summer Games Fest on June 09. There should be another trailer for Games Fest.

Who is developing CoD 2022? Infinity Ward – the creators of the “Modern Warfare” series officially take over the development.

On which platforms willMW2 be released? The current status is that CoD 2022 is still coming to the old consoles. A release for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series would be possible.

Leaks talk about CoD 2022 being the last Call of Duty to support the old consoles.

What else is there to know? A very reliable source assumes that 2023 will be the first time in almost 20 years that there will be no Call of Duty. For MW2, that means: This could be the biggest CoD yet.

There are even rumors of some sort of “subscription service”. Activision has published a job ad for a community manager, talking about a content service called “CoD 2.0”.

The job ad quickly went offline again and to this day it’s unclear what exactly was meant.

CoD MW2 2022: Editions and Open Beta

After an update at Call of Duty: Vanguard, dataminers found first info about the purchasable editions and the beta (via CharlieIntel.com).

When does the beta start? There is no date for the test phase yet. However, the cooperation between PlayStation and Call of Duty seems to continue – some editions will bring you earlier access on PS4 and PS5.

Which editions are available? The leak shows the contents of 3 different pre-order versions:

It is not yet clear what some of the items are and the content may also change.

CoD MW2 2022: Setting and Story

The new CoD 2022 is a sequel to Modern Warfare from 2019. It is supposed to continue the story from CoD 2019 and accordingly takes place in a setting that is quite similar to our world – even with the year.

Old familiar characters from the MW story are back at the start: Captain Price, Gaz, Ghost and Soap are confirmed. But the new characters from CoD MW 2019 might also return – like Farah or Alex, who was first thought to have heroically sacrificed himself at the end of the story.

Some leakers claim to have seen early gameplay and spotted a possible mission revolving around drug cartels in Colombia. Also, the moral player decisions are said to have an impact on the story.

There is said to be a significant leap forward in the intelligence of enemy NPC troops.

CoD MW2 2022: Game modes – no zombies, but “DMZ”

As usual, there is a story campaign and the big multiplayer mode. Zombies, however, are probably not planned, but a completely new co-op mode: DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).

The new DMZ mode probably has similar rules to the hardcore shooter “Escape from Tarkov” or the PvEvP mode “Hazard Zone” from Battlefield 2042.

You start at one point on a large map and have to fight your way to an exit. Real players and NPCs give you a hard time along the way. There are 25 to 30 real players on the map.

The whole thing is to be enriched with smaller RPG mechanics, which deliver a certain progress with each match. Provided you make it to the finish. If you die, you lose certain things, such as collected equipment.

How this will look in detail remains unclear for now. There is talk of special dealers, the use of your own loadout and modes for solo players, duos, trios and teams of 4.

However, we still don’t have a real idea of how DMZ wants to stand out from the competition. There are already similar approaches with Hazard Zone, Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown.

However, the mode is apparently closely related to Warzone.

CoD MW2 2022 & Warzone 2 – CoD MW again as a basis?

Warzone and CoD 2022 make common cause – like the last 3 CoD parts. Meanwhile, it is also clear that there will even be a completely new Warzone game.

When Warzone 2 comes, if it is called so, can not be said for sure. Possible at the moment seems to be a joint release or, similar to Warzone 1, a few months later. Warzone 2 should still be presented in 2022.

It is assumed that Warzone will get all the weapons again and run joint live – Season s with CoD 2022. The story is likely to be set in the current era once again. The current map, Caldera, is set at the end of World War II.

For the mentioned DMZ mode, Call of Duty is probably developing a large map, which could also come for Warzone. First concept drawings from leakers already exist:

The developers took a similar approach to CoD MW 2019. The warzone map “Verdansk” was not intended solely for Battle Royale. The missions in the co-op mode “Spec Ops” also played on the large map.

Originally, it was even planned to create the Verdansk map as an open-world for the “Spec Ops” mode. However, this was discarded and it wasn’t until Warzone that the map was playable in one piece.

With DMZ mode, things might be different this time around – the large map is the playground for the new mode and might come to Warzone later on as well.

The map is said to contain many familiar elements from the popular Modern Warfare 2 from 2009.

CoD MW2 2022: Multiplayer, Gameplay, SBMM and Content

What to know about the gameplay? There is nothing about the gameplay of the new title that is considered certain so far. Some leakers claim that they have already seen early alpha gameplay and feel that the speed is a bit faster compared to the predecessors.

The following known features are said to be in the game:

There are supposed to be changes in matchmaking that will throw strong players into easier lobbies after a certain amount of play time. A leak talks about long-term players ending up in a loose lobby every now and then in order to give players a break and a strong sense of achievement.

Already confirmed is a new graphics engine for the new CoD and the new Warzone. However, the definition of “new” is in the eye of the beholder. CoD announces a new engine almost every year, but often it is an evolution of an old engine.

What is there to know about the content? New maps are supposed to be oriented more towards a Counter Strike type of structure. There is talk of maps becoming more unique, with more variety. This should help increase the overall replay value.

Fittingly, a new and expanded “Search & Destroy” mode could be in the game, “Attackers vs. Defenders”. The maps of the mode consist of several segments, which must be taken by the attackers one by one. The defenders are supposed to prevent that.

To do this, players are assigned a specific role before a segment, including a “team leader” who coordinates the actions of the others. Other mechanics:

• Injuries hinder players who are hit
• Attackers can revive comrades
• Defenders can set traps and cameras
• Time limit to reach the goal
• Destruction on the map
• Fortifications construction

Aside from the new mode, many old familiar maps from the popular 2009 classic CoD MW 2 could be coming to the game. Long-awaited remakes are possible, such as:

• Favela
• Terminal
• High Rise
• Quarry

Those were the most important key data about the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. They are mostly leaks and guesses, but the last few years have shown how often supposed insiders are right.
