Blizzard’s Move: Killing Overwatch 1

The hotly anticipated hero shooter 2 is scheduled for release later this year as a Free2Play title will be released. To make sure that everything goes smoothly at the launch, the developers are organizing several betas. The first opportunity for fans to play the title was a while ago and opinions were divided. Many players feel the title is more of a Expansion of the first part than a completely new game. Also with the new Five-on-Five format the players are divided. Some pros even fear for their jobs. The next beta phase is scheduled to start on June 28, 2022. One announcement that will be at least as controversial is the planned shutdown of the Overwatch 1 servers.

Overwatch 1 to be shut down

In a Reddit thread, the developers of Overwatch 2 have answered all the questions from fans. In the process, they also answered a question about the Future of Overwatch 1. “When OW 2 is released on October 4, it will replace the current Live Service.”, according to the developers’ statement. In other words, Overwatch 1 will then no longer be playable and you will be forced to switch to its successor.

Originally one had at Activision Blizzard, however. other plans. Thus, after the announcement of the game in 2019, they still proudly announced that players of the predecessor will be able to play together with Overwatch 2 players on the same maps. Multiple Design decisions, such as the change to five-against-five mode, have probably now made the two games less easily compatible.

Another reason for this decision is probably that this way you only have to concentrate on one game and can bundle your resources.

Why does Overwatch 2 appear in “Early Access”?

The principle of releasing games in an unfinished version is no longer a rarity these days and offers both advantages and disadvantages. But what exactly does this vague statement mean now with Overwatch 2? The developers have an answer for this as well.

The new heroine in Overwatch 2, Junker Queen, is an aggressive solo tank specifically designed for the new 5v5 format – all previous tanks were designed for the original game’s 6v6 setup. In this new gameplay trailer you can see “Furiosa” in action!

“We use the word Early Access to make it clear that this is just the beginning and there are many new things to come. We’re releasing new heroes, maps, and features, but there’s even more content to come in the form of the 9-week – Season s. […] In addition, larger parts of the game will […] as part of the Live Service [später] will be released, including the PvE campaign next year.”, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller said of the designation.
