Call of Duty Warzone: Activision apologizes for skin plagiarism, steals another skin

Last month, Activision was hit with plagiarism allegations. According to concept artist Sail Lin, the new “Loyal Samoyed” skin for “Call of Duty: Warzone” looked a little too much like artwork Lin had uploaded to ArtStation in 2019. Activision has since apologized and removed the skin from the game.

Now, however, CoD fans smell renewed plagiarism by the company. This time, however, not from any independent artists, but from a former employee.

“Doomsayer” skin to look like from “Deadrop”

On Monday, the “Call of Duty” Twitter account released a new cosmetic bundle that includes a skin for the character Shigenori Ota. The “Doomsayer” skin consists of black armor with a hood, as well as an eye-catching blue-green glowing skull helmet. Fans were quick to point out the “Doomsayer” skin’s resemblance to a character from the game unveiled in July “Deadrop” from the studio Midnight Society.

“Deadrop” is a “Vertical Extraction Shooter” that is a collaboration between Guy “Dr DisRespect” Beahm and Robert Bowling. Bowling is the former creative strategist and community manager of “Call of Duty” developer Infinity Ward, but had already left the studio in 2012.

However, unlike the Samoyed skin, the situation with the Cosmetic with the glowing skull does not seem to be so simple. The “Doomsayer” is very similar to the character of “Deadrop”, but in the “Call of Duty” series there have already been characters who have worn hoods and skull helmets. For example, the British special forces operator Simon “Ghost” Riley, who has already received skins with hoods and skull faces in several games. In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, the operator Weaver had armor with a glowing skull called Disciple of the Dark Aether.
