Zombie Plague and Scourge Invasion Preview

Let’s once again recall the most important dates surrounding the pre-launch phase of WoW: :

  • August 31:
    • The preparation patch begins: The preparation patch for Wrath of the Lich King begins and the realms for the new start go live during regional maintenance.
  • September 6-13:
    • Event – zombie plague: A mysterious disease is spreading through the capital cities. Players must be on guard to avoid succumbing to its deadly effects.
  • September 13 to release:
    • Event – Scourge Invasion: In various locations across Azeroth, players must take defensive measures against an attacking necropolis and defeat forces of the Scourge to earn powerful rewards.

But what exactly was that world event again? As a reminder, the Blizzard developers have now published a preview of the zombie plague and the Scourge invasion on the official WoW website.

Survive the zombie plague and the invasion of the scourge

You know what this is about. The Lich King, arguably Azeroth’s most notorious villain, returns. The last time he set his sights on a target, it didn’t end well for anyone involved. Just ask Illidan Stormrage. But before you can take the fight to Northrend, you have more pressing matters to attend to. The Lich King is already taking the first steps toward disabling Azeroth’s finest heroes with a new version of the Scourge Plague. You’ll have to survive it if you want to travel to the Ice Desert of Northrend to stop him.

The Zombie Plague

Beginning the week of September 6, keen observers will notice shipments of suspicious-looking boxes arriving at wicked ports such as Booty Bay. These highly contagious containers infect anyone who touches them with a deadly variant of the plague of undeath. If you want to avoid the gruesome death, you should look for an Argent healer who will cure you. Player characters who can banish disease can also help you recover … for now.

Turn into a zombie!

If you were unable to get rid of the disease, you will become an infested zombie. You then retain control of your character, but no longer have access to the abilities you had as a living one (or non-living one if you were an abandoned one). Instead, you will gain new abilities that will help you achieve your new goal as a servant of the Lich King: infect as many as possible! As a zombie, you can use the following abilities against players and NPCs:

  • Melee: Infect the target with the plague and heal yourself.
  • Mangle!: An instant attack that shortens the duration until the infection turns the victim into a zombie.
  • Full of slime!: Spits on the ground, creating a cloud of gas that heals zombies and slows down living targets, infecting them after a period of time.
  • Calling Whine: Call up to 4 non-player zombies to come to your aid.
  • Stagger.: Increases the speed of nearby zombies (including yourself).
  • Zombie Explosion!: You blow yourself to pieces, killing yourself but also infecting everyone around you.

All the targets you infect will eventually become contaminated zombies as well if they are not treated. Soon, densely populated areas will become too dangerous. If you want to avoid this infection, we advise you to avoid these places *ahem* like the plague. When you die as a zombie, you can be revived by another player or by the Spirit Healer, or by running back to your corpse. Once you are alive again, you will be back to normal, but you can still re-infect yourself, so be on the lookout!

And it gets worse …

As the week progresses, more and more suspicious-looking crates are being delivered to every capital city in the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. Watch out for bugs like infested cockroaches, as they can spread the disease even if you attack them from a safe distance. The incubation period of the infection will become shorter and shorter, and it will become increasingly difficult to cure. Infected residents, former ordinary citizens who couldn’t fight off the plague, will make the starting areas unsafe and provide additional challenges for fresh heroes.

Over time, there will be too few Argent healers to contain the infection, and the plague will also become more resistant to magic. And this seemingly unstoppable disease is just the beginning …

Scourge invasion

Beginning the week of September 13, the Scourge invasion begins. Having survived the attack on Naxxramas (you wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?), Kel’Thuzad is ready to once again support the Lich King’s plans by striking at strategic locations throughout Azeroth. Naxxramas, the Citadel of Terror, has left the Eastern Plaguelands and has retreated to the icy continent of Northrend.

Not only must you face the spreading zombie plague, but you will also be tasked with investigating the Scourge’s activities in major cities and repelling its invasions throughout Azeroth. On your map (M) you can see where the Scourge is currently active in order to stop it.

At each invasion point, you will fight rare undead enemies that can drop various helpful items. Seek out the Argent Outfitter outside the Chapel of Hopeful Light in the Eastern Plaguelands to exchange items from invasion points for various goods, including parts of the undead slaughter and undead combat epic sets.

The aftermath

Everything has an end. Finally, the Alliance and the Horde will work together to find a cure for the zombie plague and drive the Scourge back to where it came from. When the preparatory event ends, the Lich King’s plans will have been foiled for now. Then Wrath of the Lich King Classic begin – just in time for you to take the next longship to Northrend. Celebrate your victory … while you still can.
