Young Talent: Team Hires 18-Year-Old Pro

E-sports team VIRUTOSO hired an 18-year-old player as a pro for online shooter Valorant, but overlooked an important detail during a background check: When the community raised the alarm, the team fired the player. He now vows to change.

This is the situation:

  • The North American e-sports team VIRTUOSO was looking for a 5th player for their Valorant team and found him in Anthony “Okeanos” Nguyen, who is only 18 years old. A US-American with roots in Asia, who has 722 followers on Twitch and is apparently an excellent Valorant player.
  • However, after the team announced on Friday, November 26, that they were hiring him, headwinds came from the community. It was said that they had hired a “distributor of child pornography”.
  • The team subsequently parted ways with the player on Monday, November 29.

16-year-old ex-girlfriend says player distributed nude pictures of her

What is the accusation against the player? Back in late July, a 16-year-old Twitter user made serious accusations against Okeanos. She said she dated him for about 3 weeks until she ended the relationship because Okeans wanted to move too fast without forming a real connection (via twitter).

Okeanos would have written to many of his and her friends after the relationship ended about how sad he was. She had understood this as manipulation to pressure them to take him back.

The Twitter user goes on to say that she was not proud of it, but that she had sent Okeano’s nude photos of herself, but had already asked him several times during the process not to save them, but to delete them. He assured her that he would, and she believed him. In retrospect, she describes this as “stupid” and “naive.

But when he got angry with her a few days later, apparently out of jealousy, he started sending these pictures to various people on the Discord server.

The Twitter user said in June:

  • Okeanos is 17, will be 18 in November.
  • She is now 16 years old.

She said she was incredibly angry at herself for putting herself in a situation where she was so vulnerable.

The reactions were extremely negative.

This is how the team reacts: When the team was notified of these allegations from July by angry Twitter users, they announced that they would fire the player, temporarily withdraw from the game, and look for a new player.

Player says he lost scholarship, goes to therapy

Here’s how Okeanos responds: He says while he was still 17 years old, he made a “serious mistake in his judgment.” However, he immediately apologized. In addition, he had already been doxxed at that time and lost his scholarship at school, because it also came out what he had done (via twitter).

Okeanos now says he is seeking help and, with the school’s help, has started therapy.

He says he respects VIRTUOSO’s decision to fire him and wants to apologize to the entire community, but especially to his ex-girlfriend.
