Wrath of the Lich King Classic comes 2022 without dungeon browser

#Blizzard has some news in its quiver for WoW players today. While WoW #Dragonflight does not yet have a release date, #WorldofWarcraft, Wrath of the #LichKingClassic is at least known to be happening in 2022.

WOTLK: Third WoW Classic project

After Wow Classic (September 2019, see PCGH tech test) and Burning Crusade Classic (June 2021), Wrath of the Lich King Classic is the third classic conversion for WoW. Originally announced in August 2007, the second WoW expansion was then released in November 2008. The “carefully tuned re-release” will be available at no additional cost to all players with an active subscription when it is released in 2022. Those who do not yet have a matching character will be able to take advantage of an optional character upgrade to level 70. More details on cost and availability will be announced at a later date, according to Blizzard. There were hints of WOTLK Classic back in early March.

Players will begin their in one of two zones of Northrend (Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord) and then experience “some of the most epic vistas and beloved storylines in Warcraft history before reaching the Lich King’s seat of power in Icecrown,” according to Blizzard. WoW’s hero class, Death Knights, are available for both factions and start at level 55. Players can create Death Knights in a content update prior to the release of Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Players can create their first Death Knight character without prerequisites.

The new Inscription profession allows players to create glyphs that change the appearance and properties of spells and abilities. Likewise, they can create trinkets and shield items. In the tradition of WoW Classic, players should be able to experience five-player dungeons without the automated dungeon browser. Players will also be able to revisit the floating necropolis of Naxxramas in a 10-player raid, a new version of the original 40-player raid from World of Warcraft before all the expansions.

WOTLK Classic increases the maximum level to 80. For the barber originally introduced with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, there is a gender swap that allows players to change their appearance with in-game gold instead of real money. More information on WOTLK Classic is also available from our esteemed colleagues at buffed.de.

“We are very excited to revisit one of the most popular eras in Warcraft history with Wrath of the Lich King Classic,” said Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “The initial release of this expansion brought many improvements to the game, not to mention the timeless antagonist and epic story. We’re careful to make the experience authentic to the original for those who want to relive the glory days of Northrend, and to deliver a worthy and accessible new version to those embarking on this massive for the first time.”

Update 04/20/2022: On the WoW Classic website, there is already a button to sign up for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King beta. Of course, Blizzard also wants to keep interested players in line through the beta sign-up, so there is also the following note: “Sign up now to participate in a beta test before the release of Wrath of the Lich King Classic, if you’re lucky. You’ll also receive news and latest updates on the game.” The fine print says, “By signing up, you agree to receive news and special offers from Blizzard Entertainment.”
