WoW The Warlords of Draenor – Kargath Knifefist

The next WoW expansion will take us back to Warcraft’s past. And that brings with it some familiar characters that appear for the time in World of Warcraft. Some may wonder: who are these Warlords of Draenor? In a new series of articles, we will introduce you to the leaders of the orc clans.

The next WoW expansion, Warlords of Draenor, brings with it a fair amount of Warcraft nostalgia. Our heroes travel to the old Draenor. They travel back to a time when Draenor was not yet a destroyed Outland, but the thriving home of the orcs. On Draenor, we will meet characters that only appear marginally or not at all in the games of the Warcraft series. Some may wonder who the eponymous warlords of Draenor actually are. We want to introduce them to you in this series of articles.

WoW: The warlords of Draenor – Kargath Knifefist

Kargath may look like a bad guy and not exactly a secret keeper, but he was one of the founding members of the Shadow Council. He is a warrior and thus the only non-magician. However, the warchief did not set foot on Azeroth during the Dark Portal storm. Kargath was ordered to stay on Draenor and reluctantly obeyed that order. Had he known at the time what game was being played with him, he might have reacted differently.

But as it was, Kargath ruled Hellfire Citadel – and was stuck there when the Alliance expeditionary forces came to Draenor. They suspected Ner’zhul was there and stormed the fortress. So Kargath was stuck, and realized he was being left behind as a distraction. Meanwhile, Ner’zhul was trying to open portals to other in the Black Temple. At least this realization came to him not entirely too late. Kargath was able to escape with the remnants of his army. He hoped to replenish his troops in Nagrand, but was turned away by Grandmother Geyah because the inhabitants of her village had contracted red pox.

Kargath was forced to postpone the recapture of his citadel, but was later supported by the pit lord Magtheridon. He not only provided the warchief with demons, but also transformed the orcs of the Breaking Hand into Fel orcs. Thus strengthened, Kargath was able to recapture his former stronghold and placed himself in Magtheridon’s service.

Soon, however, Illidan Stormrage took control of Outland. He overthrew Magtheridon – who was henceforth held captive by Kargath Bladefist and the Crushing Hand. World of Warcraft players also know Kargath from Hellfire Citadel. Here, the Warchief is the final boss of the Shattered Halls instance.

In the next WoW expansion, we will meet Kargath and his Shattering Hand clan in Spiers of Arak in southern Draenor. Kargath could be an interesting character, especially when interacting with Garrosh, as the two have met once. When Kargath asked Grandmother Geyah for warriors for his army, she showed him the village’s wards, which also housed Garrosh. We quote from the novel Beyond the Dark Portal:

Kargath had jumped back when Garrosh started spitting blood, and he backed away further. “No. They’re not warriors.” Disappointment and despair poisoned his words. “They’re not even orcs anymore … they’re completely useless.” He looked at Geyah, Garrosh, and the other villagers. “You pathetic weaklings!” he growled, raising his voice as best he could. “Do the Horde a favor and die in your caves! If you can’t help defend your people, you have no right to live!”

If this scene is picked up for Warlords of Draenor, how good will Garrosh be on Kargath?
