WoW The Warlords of Draenor – Durotan

the next WoW expansion, it’s back to the Warcraft past. And that brings with it some well-known characters that appear for the first time in World of Warcraft. Some might ask: Who are these Warlords of Draenor? We’re introducing the leaders of the orc clans in a new series of articles.

The next WoW expansion Warlords of Draenor brings with it a whole chunk of Warcraft nostalgia. Our heroes travel to ancient Draenor. You travel back to a time when Draenor was not yet a shattered Outland, but the thriving home of the orcs. On Draenor we will encounter characters that have only been marginally or not at all featured in games in the Warcraft series. Some people may therefore wonder who the eponymous Warlords of Draenor actually are. We want to introduce them to you in this series of articles.

Durotan assumed leadership of the Frostwolf clan even before the formation of Gul’dan’s Horde after his father Garad was killed in a battle with ogres and gronn. He joined the Horde with his clan, but had to doubt Gul’dan’s true motivation early on. Not least when the shamans of the Frostwolf clan realized that they no longer had any connection to the elements, Durotan and his mate Draka became suspicious. In order not to arouse any suspicions on his part, however, Durotan also allowed the Frostwolf shaman to undergo the warlock retraining that Gul’dan wanted.

Durotan was even more in doubt when he was instrumental in the destruction of the draenei city of Telmor. As a younger orc, he was brought to this magically hidden city after he and Orgrim were rescued from an ogre attack by the guard commander Restalaan. Remembering the ritual to remove this protection, Durotan made the storming of Telmor possible—and had to defeat Restalaan himself in battle.

However, the Frostwolf leader didn’t just make decisions that are more likely to be regretted in hindsight. For example, Durotan was able to save his clan from the worst. When Ner’zhul, by then replaced by Gul’dan and overthrown by Kil’jaeden, learned of the Burning Legion’s true plans, he confided his knowledge to Durotan. Ner’zhul warned the leader of the Frostwolf clan not to drink the demon blood. Durotan and his clan then renounced, as did Orgrim. Of course, Gul’dan didn’t like this refusal at all, and from then on he eyed Durotan critically.

Continuing to disagree with many of the Horde’s plans, Durotan and his clan were exiled when the Horde invaded Azeroth. The Frostwolf clan settled in the Alterac Mountains. Here Drek’Thar managed to return to shamanism, here the clan befriended the native white wolves. In addition, the son of Durotan and Draka was born here: Go’el. Mainly spurred on by the birth of his son, Durotan wanted to take his fate into his own hands and overthrow Gul’dan. He and Draka therefore made the journey to Orgrim Doomhammer. Durotan enlisted the support of his old friend and told him what he knew about Gul’dan, his Shadow Council and his machinations.

Orgrim – Warchief of the Horde by this point – actually listened and pledged his support to Durotan. However, he also sensed the danger that Durotan and Draka were in. Orgrim assigned some of his warriors to escort the pair to a safe haven. However, among the warriors were spies of Gul’dan, who would bring in assassins to assassinate Durotan and Draka en route. Only her son survived the attack.

Durotan in Warlords of Draenor
The leader of the Frostwolf clan will also become a resistance in the next WoW expansion. As far as we know so far, Durotan does not join the Iron Horde of Garrosh, but supports the forces of “our” Horde. Because for Horde players, the Frostfire Ridge, the territory of Durotan’s clan, is not just the starting area – this is also where the Horde has its main base on Draenor: the “Bladefire Citadel”. The Frostwolf clan is helping the Horde liberate the walls from ogre hands. Additionally, nothing is currently known about Durotan’s role in Warlords of Draenor. However, it can be assumed that he will play a more important role, especially in connection with Thrall.
