A few days ago, players on the Public Test Realm for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic noticed that they could no longer use the /spit emote on other players.
This has no animation or anything, but just makes a message appear in chat “Player X spits on Player Y”. The emote was already available in the early days of World of Warcraft. (buy now ) existed, but has since been removed for unknown reasons. Players can still spit at NPCs, but no longer at other players.
As Twitch streamer Asmongold was informed through his chat, this is probably not because Blizzard wants to protect the feelings of its players, as racial slurs can still be used without issue:
“They removed /spit, but not the N-word. I mean, what is that?”
Some players have theorized that this has nothing to do with the ongoing legal battle or the various scandals. Instead, it could be due to the new store mount for The Burning Crusade Classic. Players were not very enthusiastic about Blizzard introducing a store mount to the Classic version of their game.
Players therefore created both a Weakaura and a separate addon that automatically /spawns on players who are on the store mount. Also, some players were removed from groups when they swung on the back of the mount.
This is of course not very nice for players who bought the mount for real money. Additionally, this could scare off other potential buyers, which is why /spit on other players has probably been removed now.
Many community members were not a fan of players /spitting on other players just because they bought the mount. “Why can’t people spend their money the way THEY want to?”
Whether removing the /spit emote was appropriate or not, it’s definitely a bit odd that Blizzard continues to allow certain words in their chat, but removes this emote. Especially since /me still works in World of Warcraft, which can be used to recreate the /spit emote, so to speak.
