WoW: Burning Crusade Classic plays significantly differently than the TBC version from 2007. Our editor Karsten, who already made the Outland unsafe at the time, dares a personal comparison.
As an old vanilla veteran, WoW Classic was so much fun for me because I was able to experience the Azeroth adventure in the new edition in a completely different way than in 2005/2006. Sure, we know a lot more about the game now than we did then, and we’ve been able to approach all challenges with greater efficiency (and with less investment of time).
I also switched my focus: away from PvP towards more dungeons, special questlines that I had never played (Tier 0.5 questline for example) and alts, and with AQ40 and Naxxramas I was able to complete two raid challenges, which my guild and I had faced with unsolvable tasks in 2006.
WoW: TBC Classic – Experience old content in a new way
For WoW (buy now) : Burning Crusade Classic, I was hoping to experience the Outland adventure in a similarly “new” way, or at least from a slightly different perspective, and indeed, 2021’s Burning Crusade plays and feels very different to 2007’s Burning Crusade . As with WoW Classic, some of the reasons are obvious:
We know a great deal more about TBC today than we did in 2007, and we can address the challenges with much greater efficiency.
Basically, Patch 2.4.3 forms the basis for TBC Classic. So in class balancing, polish and other areas, TBC Classic is actually different from the original launch TBC.
At the same time, in many cases, Blizzard offers us the original dungeon and raid tuning. Many nerfs came so quickly back then that many players never played the original bosses back in 2007.
There are #somechanges like “all seals for all paladins”, tier 5 content only with phase 2 or world buff ban in the raid instances.
WoW: TBC Classic vs. TBC 2007 – the starting position
When I entered Outland in 2007, I had only one level 60 character, my villain, Creep. The first max level twink only followed in the coming months. In the beginning, my focus was clearly on my dagger swinger, who entered the Outland well equipped with his epics from business administration, AQ40 and Co.
At that time, I leveled mainly through quests and occasional dungeon visits. Even before the first raid visit at level 70, I had exchanged all vanilla epics – apart from the dragon tooth talisman. The gold I earned in TBC (in Vanilla WoW I was constantly destitute thanks to the PvP focus) was spent on fast flying.
14 years later, the starting position looked very different. Although the main protagonist is once again a villain named Creep, this time there were also various other level 60 characters waiting for their adventure in Outland.
Creep himself had access to the Classic Phase 6 BiS gear this time, and still carries four pieces from the Tier 3 class set (all raids and dungeons have been beaten multiple times). He went into the new expansion with a lot more gold, but still doesn’t have fast flying because he’s invested almost everything in character progression for himself and the alts, such as the sword Blinding Strike . And when leveling, all characters now visit the dungeons much more often to make reputation farming with the various factions a bit more efficient. After all, time is a valuable commodity.
WoW: TBC Classic vs. TBC 2007 – the endgame
I remember well how busy Alterac Valley was in the early months of TB. Part of that was certainly due to the fact that 40-player vs. 40-player battles seldom materialized on many servers during the vanilla WoW era. That only changed with the introduction of realm pools. In many cases, however, visitors to Alterac Valley were simply keen to obtain rare pieces of equipment with little effort via honor, with which they might then be able to enter Karazhan and Co. or the Arena could start.
The emphasis here was on “with little effort”. The heroic dungeons were rock hard, many items produced by crafting were too expensive and/or complex, and the first raid instances had to be weakened several times before they were open to the majority of the community. Being able to gradually buy honor items through “afk in Alterac Valley” sounded worthwhile enough for a lot of players to bum around in the large crowd game after game in the entrance area. Stupid for the players who actually ended up on the battlefield for the PvP…
In 2021, however, Burning Crusade will be completely different. The current waiting times for battlegrounds are so high, at least on the Horde side, that farming honor is an extremely time-consuming grind. So time-consuming that even many PvP fans only farm the absolutely necessary items in order not to have any blatant disadvantages in the arena.
However, there are now several more efficient ways to prepare characters for the PvE challenges. For example, many players now have a lot more gold and alts than they did in 2007 and can get powerful profession gear much faster/easier. And thanks to the knowledge, the on average better gear and the skills of today, the heroic dungeons and raids are also much more tame than they were in 2007. In other words: I feel that the dungeons and raids of TBC play a much bigger role today than they did in the beginning 2007 because it’s more accessible than it was then, and as a result, more of the community is focused on that content from week 1 onwards.
WoW: TBC Classic vs. TBC 2007 – new perspective
For me personally, this time I’m not on the road as a raid and guild leader in Burning Crusade, but as a “normal” member. All the drama surrounding the change in raid sizes and attunement requirements had had a noticeable impact on my daily gaming experience back then. And in 2021, TBC is good for personal drama again . Every raid and guild leader is not to be envied.
At the same time, I have to say that those responsible are doing a much better job today than I did in 2007. Back then, we were still dividing the clickers in Magtheridon using in-game macros. the healer classification or the assigned witcher curses can be viewed. In addition, clear calls in the fight itself and the boss is already there.
WoW: TBC Classic vs. TBC 2007 – a first conclusion
I’m having a lot of fun with Burning Crusade Classic right now, and again that’s because I’m experiencing the reboot very differently than I did the original. My characters’ starting points are different, I’m different, and the game itself is different than it was in 2007. The bottom line is that TBC Classic feels familiar and fresh at the same time, and I’m really looking forward to the phases to come.
