WoW TBC Classic: The Best Raid Setup for Phase 2 (SSC & Tempest Keep)

Phase 2 of WoW: Burning Crusade Classic is just around the corner and we want to tell you which raid setup you are best equipped with for the bosses in the Serpent Shrine and in the Eye of the Tempest Keep.

Already in the current start phase of WoW: Burning Crusade Classic you can make life noticeably easier with the right raid setup or achieve significantly faster kill times. And that doesn’t just apply to any pro guilds targeting speedkill records, but to every raid.

The reason: There are many raid-wide, but also group-internal buffs and debuffs that have a noticeably positive effect on damage, healing, threat generated and survivability. At the same time, the raid places are limited to 25 or 10 players. Also important: Some of TBC’s Raid Challenges have special setup requirements. Sometimes you need a certain class that slips into the role. Sometimes a boss is very melee-unfriendly or you need more tanks or healers than is usually the case.

After we gave you a squad recommendation for the TBC Classic phase 1 raids in April , we now want to reveal to you which setup will be equally well-armed for the battles in the Serpentshrine AND the Eye of Tempest Keep.

The setup specifics of the phase 2 raid bosses
First, let’s look at the specifics of the boss battles in the Serpentshrine and the Eye of Tempest Keep that are relevant to the raid setup.

Serpent Shrine – Hydross
You need a tank with as much natural resistance as possible and a tank with as much frost resistance as possible. Depending on your strategy, you will still need one or two add-tanks.

Serpent Shrine – The Horror from Below
You need enough tanks (main tank plus off tank) and control spells to tank the nine naga in the add phases or take them out of combat.
Ranged fighters have the advantage that they don’t have to worry about aggro.

Serpent Shrine – Leotheras
You need a warlock with as much fire resistance as possible who tanks the demon form of Leotheras. You also need a “normal” tank.
The more Hunters with Deception ready, the easier the post-Whirlwind phase transitions will be.
Ranged fighters have a slightly easier time avoiding the vortex than melee fighters. If there are too many frontline soldiers, the DoT from the vortex can cause problems for the healers.
Serpent Shrine – Karathress
You need three to four tanks for the boss and his minions.
For Caribdis you must assign reliable interrupters.
Several hunters make the pull much easier.
Serpent Shrine – Morogrim
A protection paladin who can collect the murlocs makes this fight noticeably easier.

Serpent Shrine – Lady Vashj
For Vashj you need two tanks.
A Warlock with Curse of Exhaustion helps, but the striders can also be slowed down and kited in other ways, for example by a Shaman with Frost Shock .

The Eye – Al’ar
Al’ar is immune to fire, so fire mages have little fun here.
For the fight you need three to four tanks.
Long-range fighters have it much easier here than melee fighters.

The Eye – Solarian
In addition to the normal tank, you need two tanks with high arcane resistance (preferably two warlocks).
A protection paladin will make your life easier in the add phase.
In phase 3, Fear Wards from Priests and Tremor Totem from Shamans will help.

The Eye – Void Reaver
Due to the aggro-reducing knockback, you will need two tanks.
Damage dealers with aggro-reducing abilities have an advantage here.
With enough hunters, they alone can serve as bait for the arcane orbs while the rest of the raid snuggles up with the boss. In this case, you’ll need good group healing from shamans and priests.

The Eye – Kael’thas
For this fight, you will need three tanks and ranged fighters tanking Capernian or Legendary Bow.
Some minions are very dangerous for melee fighters, and it’s easier for ranged fighters to destroy the eggs quickly.
The optimal raid setup for phase 2 of TBC Classic
If we lump all these requirements together with the known strengths and weaknesses, buffs and debuffs of the different specializations, we get the following raid setup that will make you optimally equipped for the Serpentshrine and the Eye.

Group 1 (Melee)
Protection Warrior (main tank)
Reinforcement Shaman
Vengeance Paladin
Rage Warrior
Combat Rogue

Explanation: All players in this group benefit from Totem of Wind . The assault warrior supports the protection warrior with shouts and thunderclaps. The Retaliator refreshes the sigils of all paladins and provides raid support. The Rogue has Improved Armor Weakness, which is active on bosses. In addition, there are several melee fighters in this group that can take on “kick” tasks when needed. Why rage and not weapons? After all, the weapons talent tree provides better raid support. Well, the Furor playstyle is already one of the strongest DpS specs in Phase 1, right after Warlocks, Hunters, and Arcane Mages. Especially their cleave potential is enormous. Better weapon support cannot compensate for the lower damage. But whether it’s weapons or fury, your offensive warrior will need to serve as off-tank number 4 from time to time, and should therefore get the appropriate tanking gear. A word about the main tank: of course, Druids and Protection Paladins can also take on the role of the main tank in the raid, but Shield Wall or Last Stand are the strongest solutions for problematic situations.

Alternative options: If you know a buff in your ranks that has Totem of Wind and Totem of Airy Grace, consider packing a Survival Hunter instead of the Rogue. They deal almost as much damage as Beastlords, and their raid support is even stronger.

Group 2 (hunter group)
Beast Mastery Hunter No. 1
Beast Mastery Hunter – No. 2
Beast Mastery Hunter – No. 3
Feral Druid (Off-Tank – No. 2)

Enhancement or Restoration Shaman
Explanation: The Feral Druid and Hunters benefit fully from the Shaman’s Agility Totem. The animal rulers also buff each other and are only too happy to take the druid’s crit buff with them. The damage of the hunters is enormous, in fact you will not find any other group that can give you so much single target damage. Even more so if you rotate in more rage / heroism shamans. Which shaman specialization you use here depends on how many healers you want to rely on.

Alternate Option: If you can’t fit a Survival Hunter in any other faction, consider swapping one of the Beast Rulers for the Survivalist.

Group 3 (strong caster group)
Destruction Warlock No. 1
Destruction Warlock – No. 2
Destruction Warlock – No. 3
Elemental Shaman
balance druid

Explanation: The second important DpS group of your raid. The Warlocks support each other with their shadow bolts and benefit enormously from the support of “Ele” and “Moonkin”. Of course, mages would to snuggle up between the supporting hybrids, but all mages should be playing Arcane in Phase 2, and Arkan requires a different type of support (more on that in a moment).

Alternative options: If you still have a fire mage in the raid in phase 2, you can pack him into this group for a destroyer. Normally, however, this should regularly be behind the arcane magicians in the DpS statistics. Or you can pack your Demonology or Affliction Warlock into this group. Just affliction provides further important support for the raid.

Group 4 (Caster/Prot Pala Group)
Protection Paladin (Off-Tank No. 1)
Arcane Mage
Arcane Mage
Shadow Priest
Restoration Shaman

Explanation: Already now, in phase 1, Arkan has the greatest DpS potential of all specializations. This potential only gets bigger with Stage 2, thanks to the Tier 5 set and increases in Willpower and Intellect. Arkan’s biggest construction site, the high mana consumption, is intercepted by the Shadow Priest and the Restoration Shaman. The protection paladin is also very happy about the mana support and the totems.

Alternate Options: If you’re just taking an Arcane Mage with you, or want to specifically boost the tank’s survivability, you can also pack an Affliction Warlock or another healer (such as a Druid with Treeform buff) into this group. If you don’t want to break up the first three groups, the important survival hunter can also find a place here.

Group 5 (healers)
Restoration Druid
Holy Priest
Holy Paladin
Shadow Priest

Restoration Shaman

Explanation: With the “Resto”, the healing priest and the holy paladin, the last medic types now end up in the squad. The second Shadow Priest in the squad provides the mana regeneration so that the doctoring quartet can really step on the gas. By Phase 2, most raid priests should be getting comfortable with Circle of Healing . The group heal is just extremely powerful. The only exception: you have several priests in your squad and can do without one who takes the improved Divine Will with you .

Alternative option: Especially in the progress it can make sense to pack another healer. There are already a few options for this in the previous groups, for example in the hunter group (restoration instead of reinforcement shaman) or in group 4, which is always flexibly composed. If you don’t want to make any compromises there, unfortunately the shadow priest from group 5 soft. A second Priest is always a good choice with his shields and flexible heals, but an additional Healing Shaman who brings rage / heroism and another Mana Tide Totem is never a bad idea either.
