As soon as Burning Crusade Classic for World of Warcraft goes live, many players will head to Outland to reach the new level cap of 70 and qualify for the first raid challenge. In this guide, we’ll tell you what you need to do to get the key to Karazhan.
The Burning Crusade era of World of Warcraft isn’t just known today for Outland, crunchy raid challenges, or the introduction of flight mounts. Many veterans also associate it with the numerous attunements we had to complete in order to be allowed to tackle many of the dungeon and raid challenges in the expansions.
Many of these attunements were toned down or even removed completely during the course of the addon. However, thanks to our interview during BlizzCon 2021, we now know that we will receive the original attunements at the launch of Burning Crusade Classic. For the 10-player raid Karazhan in the Mountain Pass of the Winds of Death, this means: Only those who have earned the key for the tower over a longer quest series will be allowed to take on Prince Malchezaar and his minions. We’ll tell you how to get the key in the following.
TBC Classic: Level 68 to the mountain pass!
You can start the Attunement quest series for Karazhan at level 68. Visit Archmage Alturus in the Mountain Pass of the Winds of the Dead. You will find the NPC just outside the entrance to Karazhan. Alturus will give you the first two quests.
For Arcane Disturbances you have to create two records in the cellars under Karazhan. While you’re doing that, for Restless Activity, get the ten Ghostly Essences almost incidentally. In the ruins of the village directly in front of the tower you’ll find the two staircases that lead to the cellars.
Descend the northern staircase first and always keep to the right until you come across a well where you make the first record. Kill all the ghosts along the way for the essences. The same applies to the area near the southern stairs. On this path you will come to an underground lake where you will make the second record. After that, go back to the archmage and give him the items.
TBC Classic: errands and first key fragment
Alturus has the next task for you: Dalaran contacts. Go to the Alterac Mountains and contact Archmage Cedric at the edge of Dalaran Crater. As soon as you have handed him the report, you are to speak with Archmage Khadgar in Shattrath. You will find the renowned mage on the Terrace of Light.
He will provide you with the mission To Karazhan, for which you will have to team up with other players for the first time. In the Outland dungeon Shadow Labyrinth you have to get the first key fragment from a hidden arcane container. However, you will not be allowed to enter the Shadow Maze until you defeat the final boss, Claw King Ikiss, in Sethekk Halls and take the Shadow Maze key from a nearby chest.
Now go to the Shadow Maze, defeat final boss Murmur, then prepare for another fight and open the nearby Arcane Vessel. Now the guardian of the first part will appear, whom you have to defeat to get First Key Fragment. With the fragment in your pocket, visit Khadgar again, who will provide you with the quest The Second and Third Fragments.
TBC Classic: The Attunement for “The Arkatraz” Dungeon
The other two fragments are also in Outland dungeons, and for one of them – “The Arkatraz” in the Fortress of Storms – you need to get the attunement first.
To do this, travel to Netherstorm, Area 52, where you’ll be given the quest Consortium Crystal Collection by Nether Stalker Khay’ji. A long quest line follows, which first sets you a series of tasks in Netherstorm. Once you’ve mastered all the tasks, you’ll eventually end up with A’dal in the center of Shattrath, who will provide you with How to Break into Arkatraz.
To complete the new mission, you’ll need to get the lower and upper fragments of the Key to Arkatraz, respectively, from the final boss in both the Mechanar and Botanika dungeons. Since the dungeons are also located in the Fortress of Storms, you will need a flight mount to reach the respective entrances without a port.
Once the two fragments are in your inventory, A’dal will give you the key to Arkatraz. Now you can get the remaining fragments of the Karazhan key for Khadgar.
TBC Classic: The second and the third fragment
In “The Arkatraz” you don’t have to fight your way to the final boss for once. You will find the corresponding key fragment in the room behind the first boss, Zereketh the Independent. Note that the opening of the Arcane Vessel will cause a guard to appear here as well.
For the last key fragment, head to the Zanga Marshes, or more precisely, to the underground Lizard Cauldron. Enter the dungeon “The Steam Chamber” and knock the first boss Water Summoner Thespia off her feet. The Arcane Vessel is underwater, near the boss platform. Defeat this guardian as well, bag the fragment and bring all the pieces to Khadgar.
TBC Classic: The Attunement for “The Black Morass” Dungeon
The Key of the Apprentice has been restored, but it still needs to be activated. Khadgar therefore sends you with the quest The Touch of the Master to Medivh, whom you find in the Caves of Time in Tanaris. Unfortunately, there is a complication here as well.
Medivh is in the dungeon “The Black Morass” and you can’t just enter it. Therefore, in the Caves of Time, first talk to the Steward of Time to get the task To the Master’s Hoard. This is followed by a conversation with Andormu and a longer walk through the caves alongside the Keeper of Time until you finally complete The Caves of Time.
Next, your path will lead you back to Andormu, who will send you to the local dungeon, Foothills of the Old Hill Country, with The Old Hill Country. Once in the dungeon, talk to Erozion and complete all the objectives within the dungeon until you finally save Thrall and defeat the final boss. In return, Andormu will now provide you with the Black Morass quest and permission to enter the dungeon of the same name.
