WoW: Hunters and their pets

For years, hunters in WoW have been choosing their pets mainly based on two aspects. For many hunters, the appearance of the companion is the first priority. Those who are competitive, on the other hand, sometimes choose based on a certain buff or ability. In PvE, however, this has played a subordinate role for years, because the companions no longer have any really relevant buffs. Gone are the days when pets could sometimes revive teammates or keep important debuffs like armor tearing up on bosses. Only for heroism/combat frenzy is the pet occasionally changed.

This circumstance, and the associated question of how to proceed with the pets in Dragonflight, has led to a lively discussion in the Community Council forum. Now Blizzard has commented on this for the first time, but without really revealing any details. Nevertheless, the hunters can be happy, because one of the major weaknesses of the pets will be significantly improved in the future – at least that’s what the Blizzard developers promise.

Identity is important

The developers at Blizzard realize that the identity of the Pets is important for the hunters. This includes, for example, that the well-armored turtle can take more than the cunning fox or the agile cats. On the other hand, there must also be a certain amount of balancing. These two demands are not always, but regularly in direct conflict with each other.

If the pets were only visually different from each other, balancing would not be a problem. If, on the other hand, the companions were as individual as they were in Classic, the balancing would suffer enormously. The Blizzard developers are aware that there is no right or wrong here and that a satisfactory result for all players can never be achieved.

An example of this would have been Hati from the Beast Lords artifact weapon. Many players want a specific visual type for their pet. As a result, they said it was possible to customize the look for Hati relatively quickly. An approach that has consistently continued with the talent animal companion. At this point, the developers also mentioned that the longstanding bug in the game that the second pet reduces the damage of all summoned companions (for example, from trinkets), instead of only that of the second pet, will soon be fixed.

Hunter companions should have individuality, but at the same time the balancing should not be destroyed - a difficult task for WoW developers. The companions of the hunters should have individuality, but at the same time the balancing must not be destroyed - a difficult task for the WoW developers.

The Pet is not a “throwaway” item

The developers want to keep the very long spell time for reviving and sending away a pet, which is not very popular among hunters, in Dragonflight. The hunter should have a special bond to his special pet – in contrast to warlocks or death knights. The long spell time is supposed to prevent hunters from simply calling the next and the next pet and sending them into battle if the pet dies. Or even permanently switch between Pets in the ongoing battle situationally and only consider them as a buff machine or spell from the spellbook.

Better wayfinding

Since the developers also play pet classes themselves, they are aware of how frustrating the companion wayfinding can be at times. They are constantly working on improving and adapting this. However, this is much more difficult than they imagine. The players themselves would not only move unpredictably, but also use all kinds of tools to get around. We want to prevent it from feeling as if the companion is constantly hovering around or teleporting from A to B.

A lot of clarification, but little outlook

Although the blog post from the Blizzard developers contains some relevant information, there wasn’t really much new. Actually, the developers only clarified that they know about the community’s problems and explained why they exist. This might not be what the many hunters were hoping for, but it’s still progress. While such things were rather hushed up in the past, today they at least keep the community up to date and try to clarify why, what is what.
