YouTuber Bellular does the math and explains: World of Warcraft still has 2 million active players – at best.

World of Warcraft’s player numbers have been a big mystery for years. After all, Blizzard doesn’t release official data, so other analysis techniques and speculation have to serve. The YouTuber and streamer Bellular made it his business years ago to constantly re-evaluate the current state of WoW. In his research, he comes to the conclusion that WoW has maybe 2 million active players – and that’s only in the best case scenario.

What happened?

In one of his latest videos, Bellular pulls together several recent statistics and compares them to numbers from previous WoW expansions and patches. Even though all the aspects mentioned are quite interesting, one number stands out. For example, he says, “WoW currently still has between 1.2 million and 2.0 million active players.

How does the data come about?

In different ways. Most of it is read via the Blizzard API and the Armory, which is the database of all WoW characters. Through the updates there, it is possible to see how many characters are actively played and are, say, level 60 or have chosen a pact. Together with other sites, such as Raider.IO, you can collect a few more data.

The most important number is the character set of 2,691,799 as of August 2. This is the number of characters who chose a pact in Shadowlands and logged in at least once within the last month so that an update occurred in the database. So these are characters that have either reached level 60 or have chosen Threads of Fate as a secondary character at level 50 in Oribos.

Somewhere between 900,000 and 1,800,000 is probably the truth.

However, around 2.7 million characters does not equate to 2.7 million active accounts. That’s because this number doesn’t factor in how many players are playing more than one active character at a time. Those who maintain numerous twinks (“alts”) would have to be factored out, as would players who maintain multiple accounts simultaneously.

• If each player plays an average of 1.5 characters, then the active player count would be around 1.8 million.
• If each player plays an average of 3 characters, then the active player count would be just over 900,000.

The actual number will probably be somewhere in between.

How has the number of players changed over the years?

It’s difficult to say. In the early years of the World of Warcraft lifecycle, Blizzard was still publishing player numbers. World of Warcraft peaked in 2010 with just over 12 million active subscribers. Since 2015 – when there were still 7.1 million subscribers – there are no official figures.

However, the trend analyzed by Bellular also coincides with data from other sites and analysis methods. Thus, the amount of completed “Mythic+” dungeons in – Season 2 of Shadowlands has drastically decreased, as well as the amount of raid visits to the Sanctum of Domination. In other words, there are significantly fewer players in the endgame than there were a few months ago.

Scandal not yet included:

Particularly worrying in this data is the large wave of protests against Blizzard, which led to the departure of numerous players, is not even included. Accordingly, it is quite possible that the current figures look a little darker and the actual player base has reached a new all-time low.

Despite all this, it should be remembered that these are not official figures, but have been compiled from various sources. An exact value of the current subscription numbers and players probably only Blizzard itself knows.
