WoW Guide: WoWisch for beginners

If the mage sheept, the mob resisted, and the healer went down due to aggro, the wipe beckoned: WoW slang represents the biggest challenge to the German language since the dative was the death of the genitive.

You just arrived in Azeroth? And you wonder why people communicate so strangely in the chat window? Then read what WoW has developed in four years: WoWish, a mixture of more or less correct German and English. Especially in the capitals, you’ll be able to communicate with LFG, VK and WTS…. er… texted. Epics are checked, ports are requested for UC and in the back a BFT wants to be drawn, which even offers gold for it. But especially for group adventures, the linguistic heat will be on. We have translated the most important WoW phrases for you, so you know what to do and what not to do.

Lack of understanding makes life in instances unnecessarily difficult. To prevent that, here are the basic rules: When the raid leader talks about focus fire, he is not giving a fire speech to a well-known German news magazine. Instead, he means that all squad members should attack a target he specifies as far as possible. Anyone who shoots at anything other than the given target quickly becomes the group’s idiot. Particularly “popular” are the fellow soldiers who pick up the sheep. This refers to opponents who have been turned into a sheep by a wizard. If you get that “out of the sheep” by doing area damage or attacking the sheep, you’ll soon be a welcome guest…. In the next graveyard.

When one or more party members write or say guttural sounds like oom in chat, it has nothing to do with typos or language practice. This abbreviation stands for “out of mana”: the opponent’s mana pool is empty. If you mess with fresh monsters while your colleagues are still regenerating, you will not only draw the displeasure of your opponents, but also that of your own party. This usually happens by an unintentional, but in rare cases also by an intentional pull. Experienced WoW players understand this as attracting one or more opponents.

No desire for a mob

This also leads us to aggro management, the skillful handling of threats. When you damage an enemy, you automatically draw attention to yourself, which isn’t always good for your health. Most of the threat should come from the tank of the group. Often Warriors, Druid Bears, Death Knights, or Paladins will step into this role because they can take a lot of hits. Other classes, however, are better suited for crowd control (“cc”), cleverly keeping individual enemies at bay with fear, enchantment, or tether effects while taking care of the more dangerous opponents. If the tank can’t get the mob’s aggro away from the healer fast enough, keeping him alive with his healing spells, fatalities quickly occur. To avoid this, tanks have a whole arsenal of abilities, such as taunting: The tank insults (taunts) a mob in the worst possible way, which in response wants to deform its face.

By the way, mobs are not used to describe enemies controlled by players. Adds, on the other hand, are mobs that are additionally drawn into the fight, usually by noobishly hopping around. But what is a noob again? Some use it to refer to all moderately skilled WoW players, while others use it to refer to newcomers who attract attention through unconventional actions. Finally, the word wipe has another central meaning. It refers to the downfall of an entire group of players. How does it happen? Here’s a formula: Fear x Adds plus Noobs = Number of Wipes .
