WoW Guide: The Sunwell Plateau

Sunwell Plateau was the last major raid challenge from the Burning Crusade era. The raid instance is aimed at groups of 25 players.

The Isle of Quel’Danas
With the introduction of patch 2.4, a new area was added to World of Warcraft. The Isle of Quel’Danas hosts numerous daily quests and another raid instance, the Magister’s Terrace. The Sunwell Plateau is the most difficult 25-player instance to date and demands a lot from you. To really get started, your equipment must come almost exclusively from the Black Temple and Hyjal. The second boss in particular, Brutallus, will push you to your limits. If you haven’t defeated Illidan too many times, only the boss will be an option for you, but there’s plenty to loot from the trash mobs as well. You’ll set out with a powerful squad of three tanks and six to eight healers. The blood elf enemies on your way are all controllable, so three or more mages are a huge help. which reduces your dodge chance by 20 percent and increases the enemy hit chance by 5 percent. So even the best tanking equipment is not as good as it was in the Black Temple.

The battle against Kil’Jaeden’s minions begins
Here we go! The First Protector of the Sun Blades patrols the courtyard. He is an improved version of the guard robots in the Magisterial Terrace. On one side he really hits your tank, on the other side he shoots devil lightning at your party members. Spreading players out doesn’t help at all, it just reduces the effectiveness of your shaman’s chain healing. Put three healers on the tank, and the rest will take care of the group healing. You will then encounter two groups of blood elves. These consist of the most diverse fighters the Guardians of the Sunwell have to offer. The cabalists are constantly summoning goblins to support them – so better cool them down with a polymorph. The Battle Mages are also unpleasant fellows, constantly blinking around, rooting you with a Frost Nova, and attacking the raid with an Storm. Take them out of the fight as well. Another problem can be the evening priests. Their Spirit Strike hits multiple players at once, which can make the group damage quite high – so fight them first or transform them. All remaining enemies will take over your tanks, though a brave Druid can quietly put the Dragonhawk to sleep. The Morning Priests heal your comrades a bit, but you can interrupt the Holy Nova. The Defenders attack you with the Cleave skill – so as a tank, you should distract them from the group. The killers are also quite harmless, they shoot at you with a crossbow, but if the tank goes into melee range, they will hit you only lightly.

Deactivated guardian robots
After the two groups, hostile blood elves still await you, but you fight them a bit more cunningly. There are disabled guardians all over the courtyard. Don’t get too close to them, or they’ll come to life on their own. The six blood elves are now joined by scouts with low hit points. As soon as you bring the blood elves into the fight, the scouts will run to the nearest guard robot and try to reactivate it. Aim your fire directly at him and take him out before he does his deed. But also make sure to take out some of the other blood elves before they reach your group. The tanks will take care of the rest. Only after the blood elves are taken out, take care of the guard robot. Watch for a patrol roaming the courtyard. Later, climb the outer border wall. There, too, three groups of six and two patrols await you, which you fight in the usual way. Only a protector of the Sunblades then blocks your way to the first boss, Kalecgos.
