WoW Guide: Pet Battle – Basics and Tips for the “Pet Battles”

The pet battles are one of the major innovations of the WoW expansion Mists of Pandaria. The cuddly WoW pets are now more useful than showing them off and become real fighters. We give an overview of the pet battles.

Pet battles in World of Warcraft – since the launch of the Mists of Pandaria expansion, WoW fans can not only go for a walk with their collected pets. The little rascals have to prove themselves in duels against NPCs, wild animals and other players. We give an overview of the system of “Pet Battles”.

Getting started with pet battles is very simple. Any character level 5 or higher can learn pet training for a fee of 100 gold pieces. Important to note: The training applies to all accounts. So you only have to put gold on the table once with one character. Your other characters will automatically receive the pet training. Visiting the trainers with different characters is still worthwhile: every playable race can pick up a suitable race-specific pet from the trainer. If you don’t own all of these pets yet, a visit with characters from all races can pay off.

WoW Pet Battle: The Wild Animal

The linchpin of your career as a pet tamer is the wildlife handler. Here you will find all the pets you have captured so far – and you can also see which pets are still missing from your collection. You also put your team together here. Important: Your team consists of three pets. At the beginning of your career you only have one slot available. In the course of the introductory quests, you quickly unlock two more places.

You can swap out pets at any time outside of battles or queued for PvP duels. Unfortunately, there is currently no option in the standard interface to save multiple team compositions. The WoW addon Pet Battle Teams can remedy this and is recommended if you plan to play regularly with different pet combinations.

WoW Pet Battle: The Animals

The WoW pets are divided into several types. Each type of pet brings with it a different passive bonus. Here is the overview.

  • Aquatic: The duration of damage over time effects is reduced by 25% on aquatic pets.
  • Dragonkin: Dragons deal 50% additional damage on the next turn after bringing a target’s health below 25%.
  • Elemental: Elementals ignore all weather effects.
  • Flying: Creatures with flying gain 50% additional speed while above 50% health.
  • Humanoid: Humanoids regenerate 4% of their maximum health if they attacked in the current turn.
  • Critter: Critters shrug off crowd control effects faster.
  • Magical: Magical pets cannot lose more than 50% of their maximum health in a single attack.
  • Mechanical: Comes back to life once per battle with 20% health.
  • Undead: Undead pets respawn for its turn if killed and cannot be killed during it.
  • Beast: Beasts deal 25% additional damage when below half health.

Appropriately, the different abilities of the pets are divided into categories and are more or less effective against certain types of pets. This is important because not every pet has abilities unique to that pet’s type. Here is the overview.

  • Aquatic: Strong against elementals and weak against magical enemies
  • Dragonkin: Strong against magic enemies and weak against undead
  • Elemental: Strong against mechanical opponents and weak against small animals
  • Flying: Starts against aquatic opponents and weak against dragonkin
  • Humanoid: Strong against Dragonkin and weak against Beasts
  • Critter: Strong against undead and weak against humanoids
  • Magical: Strong against flying enemies and weak against mechanical enemies
  • Mechanical: Strong against Beasts and weak against Elementals
  • Undead: Strong against humanoids and weak against aquatic enemies
  • Beast: Strong against small animals and weak against flying enemies

In addition, each WoW pet eligible for pet battles has the following basic attributes:

  • Health – the pet’s health points
  • Power – affects the damage dealt
  • Tempo – determines which pet starts attacking in a turn

You unlock new skills for your pets by leveling them up. A new skill becomes available at each of levels 2, 4, 10, 15, and 20. From the maximum of six skills available per pet, you select three in the animal guide, which are then available to you in the next fight. How much experience a pet gets depends on a few factors.

  • The pet must actively engage in combat
  • You must win the fight
  • The pet must survive the fight
  • The pet’s level can’t be too far above the opponent’s level
  • Experience points are only awarded in PvE duels and in random PvP matches

You can take advantage of these circumstances, for example, to switch in a pet that is actually too low-level for a round in a battle of high-level pets. If the pet survives the round and you then win the fight, there’s an extra boost of experience points due to the increased difficulty. In this way, individual pets can be “followed” comparatively quickly. Also note that there are fewer experience points for fights in which you capture a wild animal.
