Molten Core was the first major raid instance for World of Warcraft. 40 players went up against the cult boss Ragnaros and his minions.
Hidden deep beneath Blackrock, Molten Core is home to powerful fire creatures and their master, the Firelord Ragnaros. Blackrock was created during the War of the Three Hammers, when the dwarven clan of Dark Iron Dwarves from the Red Ridge Mountains turned against the other two clans of Wildhammer Dwarves from Grim Batol and Bronzebeard Dwarves from Ironforge.
The leader of the Dark Iron Dwarves, the wizard Thaurissan, seeing no other way to victory, attempted to summon a powerful demon to aid him in battle. By mistake, however, he instead summoned Ragnaros the Firelord, who had been banished from Azeroth by the Titans in the early days. He destroyed Thaurissan and enslaved the Dark Iron people. To this day, Dagran, a direct descendant of Thaurissan, rules the Dark Iron Dwarves from the Blackrock Depths.
The Path to the Core and the Pre-Quest
The Molten Core is the most difficult instance in Blackrock. It is located between the Burning Steppes and Searing Gorge, and also houses the Blackrock Depths and the Lower and Upper Blackrock Spires.
The entrance to the core is located in the Blackrock Depths. Once you complete the preliminary quest, you can shortcut it so you don’t have to walk through Blackrock Depths every time. You can get the preliminary quest “Attunement to the Core” at level 55 from Lothos Riftwaker, a blood elf standing right at the entrance to the Blackrock Depths. Once you’ve completed it, you can always speak to Lothos directly in the future and he will teleport you to the Core. This also works as a ghost. The preliminary task is to retrieve a core fragment from the entrance of the core and bring it to Lothos. This fragment is located in the wall just outside the green instance portal and requires you to fight through most of the Blackrock Depths at least once.
Claim.
Molten Core is one of the most difficult instances in World of Warcraft. It requires a well-coordinated group of 40 players to visit the core as regularly as possible. There are heaps of epic gear to grab, including the full T1 set and, for Ragnaros himself, the T2 pants set. As a battlegroup instance, the core is scheduled to reset once a week, with all enemies respawning during this reset. If you participate in defeating a boss, you will receive an ID for the instance and will not be able to enter the core with another group that same week.
In the core of the instance, players must strictly follow the raid command’s instructions regarding paths to travel and mobs to attack next. If a player goes exploring alone or strays away from the group, this will very quickly end in a wipe. Therefore, it is important that the raid leader announces the course of action in Teamspeak or similar and that the rest of the group members do not discuss it in public chat. It is also recommended to have individual chat channels for the classes to discuss the procedure for refueling, buffing, etc.
Another important point is equipment. During the runs on the core, the goal of the group will be to improve their equipment (especially in terms of firepower). However, players should also meet a certain standard of equipment beforehand in order to survive at all. At least some parts of the T0 or T0.5 sets as well as mostly blue equipment with class-specific bonuses are mandatory.
Potions (fire protection, mana and healing), bandages and the symbols needed for buffing are the most important consumables. Repair bots for emergencies are also not forgotten. Also, make sure that you always go to the core with fully repaired equipment.
