Due to a bug in the matrix, you find your main WoW character on a role-playing server. When you desperately ask a gamemaster, you get the answer, “We are aware of the problem. Unfortunately, we can’t help you right now.” Anxious and forlorn, you look around and see a strangely dressed dwarf approaching from your left. “Greetings, friend,” the stranger calls to you in a gruff voice. “You look confused, young warrior!” The dwarf begins to laugh, “But there’s nothing a good mug of Thunder Brew can’t cure. Follow me to the Blue Hermit, I’ll buy you your first round, and then you’ll tell me your story.” You follow the stranger slowly through the dark alleys of Stormwind. After a few steps you reach a nondescript tavern. Wisps of smoke hang in the air and quiet music, melancholically sung by a veiled elf, creates a mysterious atmosphere. Your new acquaintance leads you purposefully to one of the back tables. Three other dwarves greet your guide and then shake your hand in a friendly manner. You sit down and begin your story….
RP – what is that anyway?
Okay, no more clichés. After all, the common image of “World of Warcraft” RP players is a strangely dressed character who basically just speaks in an ancient language and talks for hours about himself and his adventures. That’s not right, of course. So we have to ask ourselves, what is RP and what exactly does it do? Role-playing games, or RP for short, are lived out by very few players throughout the day. Most meet at pre-arranged events or go to one of the busy inns to relax for a few minutes after a long night of raiding. Otherwise, RP players play their character like any other person. They raid instances, collect gold, and hunt for achievements. The big difference from the others is the personal story of the characters and the time the players invest in them. You are not just dwarf X with name Y. You create your own personal role and can play what you want, free from the normal lore. Of course with certain limits, because also in roleplaying the golden rule applies: The freedom of the individual ends where the freedom of the other begins.
