With the introduction of the Wrath of the Lichking expansion, a tenth playable class has been introduced to the world of World of Warcraft: The Death Knight is said to offer, for the first time, the ability to perform the tasks of a Tank or a Damage Dealer with each of the three talent trees. In the current part of our WoW class guide series, we dedicate ourselves to the Death Knight in the role of Damage Dealer and show you the advantages and disadvantages of the three talents Blood, Frost, and Unholy for the fighter on the front lines. In addition to various tips for fighters in raids and groups, this guide provides Death Knight newcomers with important basics for a good start to their future career as a fighting plague slinger on two legs. The guide is rounded off by a look behind the scenes of PvP, in which we give you one or two pieces of advice for the arenas and battlegrounds.
The Death Knight in the raid
It’s going to get bloody: The Blood Death Knight in the Raid
Ever since the Death Knight was introduced into the class concept of World of Warcraft, the Blood Death Knight in particular has been considered an exceptionally strong melee fighter against one or two opponents. His attacks are primarily physical in nature – the few exceptions such as Death Spiral and Blood Boil take up only a small place in the damage portfolio of the Plague Slinger. Thanks to the talents Veteran of the Third War , Strength of Abomination and Greedy Dead, the Blood Death Knight reaches enormous strength values and his two important abilities Viciousness and Dancing Rune Weapon have comparatively low cooldowns, so they can be used multiple times in boss fights. ThroughStrength of Abomination, Blood Disciples also have a useful raid buff. With patch 3.3.3, this has been strengthened and can be used even more efficiently than Unleashed Fury of the Reinforcer Shaman. Below, we’ll go into more detail about the Blooddeath Knight in raid and show you important information about the optimal skill set, the appropriate glyphs, and how to best use your abilities in battle.
Sickness or rather a dark death?
As a Blood Death Knight, you have two possible alignments to achieve the highest possible damage values. One is the Dark Death variant, or 51/0/20 :
For the three main glyph slots in this variant, choose Glyph of the Dancing Runic Weapon , Glyph of the Deathblow and Glyph of Dark Death .
As an alternative, the variant “disease” or 51/0/20 is available:
The name of the variant gives it away: the glyphs Glyph of Disease , Glyph of Deathblow and Glyph of Dancing Runic Weapon are your first choice.
In both variants, there are four points that can be set slightly differently. This refers to the points in Bloodworms and Improved Blood Presence . However, there are no damage-increasing talents as an alternative. After all, Bloodworms deal almost 80 damage per second, and the healing effect from Improved Blood Presence is passive, meaning you don’t have to waste blood runes that you could have invested in heartbeats.
You have damage
Two skill variations also come with two useful rotations. But regardless of whether it’s Dark Death or Plague, there are some priorities you should definitely stick to. The two diseases “Icy Touch” and “Plague Strike” should always be your top priority. This is the only way for your Heartbeat to have its full effect. Use the two abilities Heart Strike and Death Strike as long as you have the necessary runes. Death Spiral is only used when all runes are depleted or you need to move and are out of melee range of the target for a few seconds. During these phases you should also use your free global cooldowns, Horn of Winter to refresh or summon your Ghoul. As with all damage dealers, it’s also important to use your higher cooldown damage increasing options wisely. A little rule of thumb: the more buffs you have working together, the greater the effect you get from them. The best example of this is your Dancing Rune Weapon ability. The strength of the Dancing Blade depends on your current buffs. So, the weapon gets the greatest possible effect when Rage/Heroism, Malice, the effect of a trinket, an improved Rune Weapon, and a Speed Potion work together. Use the Anti-Magic Shell ability to increase your Runic power specifically. For example, it makes sense to use the shell just before you summon your dancing rune weapon.
When fighting three or more enemies, you should either switch to an alternate Unholy skill – dual skills make it possible – or at least adjust your Blood Disciple’s rotation a bit. The goal should be to spread your diseases to all targets and deal area damage with Boiling Blood.
Notable:
You fight in Blood Presence to achieve maximum damage values. The choice of weapon falls on two-handed swords of any kind. Orcs prefer large axes, dwarves love swinging maces, while humans prefer mighty swords or maces – the reason is the weapon specialization of the respective racial bonuses. When you have found a suitable weapon, you should strengthen it in the Black Fortress with the Fallen Crusader rune.
The Rune Strike attack can only be cast after you have dodged or parried an attack. Essential for blood tanks, just a gimmick for damage dealers. A gimmick that can significantly increase your damage from time to time! With bosses like Lord Mark ‘gar, your Runic Strike will inevitably come into play. Reason enough to macro this attack with the Heart Strike and Deathblow attacks as a damage dealer. A macro for this could look like this:
#showtooltip Heartstrike
/script UIErrorsFrame:UnregisterEvent(“UI_ERROR_MESSAGE”);
/cast heartbeat;
/cast !runebeat;
/script UIErrorsFrame:RegisterEvent(“UI_ERROR_MESSAGE”);
Increased running speed can be worth its weight in gold as a damage dealer in many situations. The faster you can get back to your opponent in high-motion fights, the more damage you can deal.
One-handed weapon/two-handed weapon
Fallen Crusader Rune
For the Frost Disciples offhand
Rune of Cutting Ice
Jewel stones for PvE
Uses the Relentless Earthring Diamond as a metastone. Actually, the Chaotic Aurora Diamond would be a little better for you, but you should also consider the activation cost of the metastone: Two or more blue gems in your own equipment should be avoided if possible. Put the Prismatic Nightmare Tear in a blue socket with a good socket bonus – for example, with an increase in the Strength attribute . This will satisfy the metastone’s activation requirements in one fell swoop. Fill red and blue sockets with Chunky Cardinal Rubies for the highest damage increase. You can get the two gems Etched Ametrine and Solid Royal Amber in yellow sockets to the required 263 hit points. However, try to get the hit points from equipment only as soon as possible!
Blood and Unholy Death Knights are given a choice between Strength and Armor Penetration when upgrading their equipment. Examine your equipment when choosing between Strength and Jewel Armor Penetration. If you reach an Armor Penetration value of nearly 1,400 points through equipment and sockets (or buff food and elixirs in a pinch), you should definitely socket Broken Cardinal Rubies everywhere. The only exception: a Nightmare Tear in a blue socket or in a yellow socket with a good bonus activates the necessary requirements for your meta stone.
Changes with Patch 3.3.3 – General
* Icy Touch: Now causes a high level of threat when Death Knight’s Frost Presence is active.
* Ice Chains: This ability now automatically casts Frost Fever on the target.
* Rune of Lancinating Ice: Now stacks 5 stacks of 2% Frost Vulnerability instead of 10 stacks of 1% Frost Vulnerability. Proc chance has been changed to 100%.
Changes with Patch 3.3.3 – Blood.
* Strength of Abomination: this effect is now passive instead of having a proc chance on certain hits. Rank 1 gives 5% attack power, rank 2 gives 10% attack power. The caster’s strength-increasing effect on themselves remains unchanged.
* Will of Necropolis: The frequency with which this ability can be activated is no longer subject to a cooldown. In addition, this ability can now be activated even if the damage is less than 5% of the Death Knight’s health.
