The best roles for all classes
All nine WoW Classic classes have their own strengths and weaknesses, which will naturally come into play on the battlefield. If you want to get the most out of your archetype, you should focus on your class’ strengths and take the role that helps the team the most. But which role best suits each class? We’ll tell you!

Druid: By far the best flag bearer in the game.
Hunter: Strong defender who should constantly hunt down enemy mages and druids.
Warlock: Powerful control class that helps control the center, defend the base or take down the enemy flag bearer.
Warrior: Sets the focus in team fights, helps control the center or finishes off the enemy flag bearer.
Mage: Controls opposing players in team fights or to protect the flag bearer. Good alternative to the flag bearer.
Paladin: Supports the team with healing, auras, blessing of freedom, blessing of protection and more.
Priest: Supports the team where they need support with their versatile toolbox. Shadow Priests are strong backup defenders.
Shaman: Joins the team’s Warrior, cleansing the current focus target and helping nuke the enemy flag bearer.
Rogue: An excellent defender of your own flag area. Helps finish off the enemy flag carrier.

A strong composition for a group can look like this, for example: 1x druid, 1x hunter, 1x sorcerer, 1x warrior, 1x shaman or paladin, 1x rogue, 2x magician, 2x priest. But don’t worry: other compilations can also be very successful. In addition, the optimal setup also depends on the opposing team. If your enemy relies on magicians as flag bearers due to a lack of druids, or if the group of adversaries generally consists of many magic material classes, then a second hunter is worth its weight in gold. However, many Horde teams also like to pack a second warrior to form a powerful melee squad for the middle together with the shaman. Alliance teams, on the other hand, like to rely on a second paladin, since the plate popes simply have such a blatant toolkit of support spells. In short:

Clear communication is worth its weight in gold

In the Warsong Gulch, several events usually happen at the same time that can decide between victory and defeat. A flag is attacked here, a flag is to be retrieved there. But where is the opposing flag bearer running? How many defenders are stuck to their own flag bearer? All of these and many more things need to be clarified constantly via voice or in-game chat. It is extremely helpful if you communicate briefly and clearly and use familiar vocabulary.

The areas cemetery, flag room, roof, balcony, tunnel and center are actually self-explanatory. The huts are named after the buffs that can be picked up there: Berserker or Leaf. The banana-shaped ascent from the tunnel to the roof is actually called “banana” by many professional groups. The room next to the flag room with the ascent to the balcony and the exit towards the cemetery is the lobby or “connector”.

Warsong Gulch general

  • At the start of the match, a defender (usually the rogue) will take the sprint buff out of the tunnel, only to position themselves in the flag room in such a way that they have a view of all entrances and are difficult for opponents to spot and incapacitate .
  • The task of the hunters is normally to track down the opponent’s flag bearer and prevent them from simply invading their own base. The more cooldowns he has to activate to get past the hunter, the better. Beacons and traps help the huntsman.
  • Assigns a center player from the group who can drop back if needed when defenses (usually rogue and hunter) need support. A warlock is made for this role.
  • The “middle” team (usually consisting of warrior plus shaman/paladin and priest) grabs the berserker in the hut near their own base and then tries to split up the opposing group and control the center. Warlocks and hunters provide support here if possible.
  • Meanwhile, the druid and mages approach from the enemy flag room from different routes: the druid mostly through the tunnel, the mages via the outer areas. However, some teams also leave a mage with the “middle” team to support them there with control spells. It can also make sense to send a healer up front, because the opponent has left an unusually large number of defenders behind and your own flag bearer can hardly get out of the flag area – paladins in particular are strong as supporters here!
  • Since the druid can easily shrug off debilitating effects with shapeshifting, he should always be the main flag bearer. The magician or magicians then use their control effects to help him escape.
  • With a strong defense you can also send a bait into the flag room and let it run out in the direction of the graveyard. If he doesn’t already manage to flee with the flag to the “middle team”, he will at least pull the entire defense with him in the second best case. If the bait blesses the time, many players usually click on the flag immediately, in order to prevent a new conquest, for example by a hidden villain. Now a second player, already positioned at the flag point, can escape undisturbed with the flag from the other exit.
  • When both flag-bearers move through the middle, protecting your own flag-bearer should always be the first priority. The only exception: Your flag bearer is not currently being attacked and the opponent’s flag bearer is halfway unprotected (e.g. because many opponents are waiting in the graveyard to be revived).
  • In the best case, in such a situation, the villain sets out early for the enemy base in order to a) stealthily ambush the enemy flag bearer (sometimes this is a good way to retrieve the flag solo), b) pick up the flag in time, if one’s own flag bearer falls, or c) telling the team where the opponent’s defense is positioned and how many players are defending.

  • If both flag bearers are in their own base with the opponent’s flag, the group splits into two teams that stay together if possible. In defense, you should definitely have at least one magician who can keep opponents who are too clingy from the druid’s body. In addition, a healer (preferably a priest) and the hunter. On the offensive, warriors including shamans/paladins, rogues, warlocks and whoever else you can spare are in good hands.
  • Since the defense mostly protects their flag bearer with flares and area spells, you can use a ruse when your team attacks collectively: position your villain in a place where the enemy’s fleeing flag bearer is likely to run along if they want to escape the pressure in the base . In such a situation, most players will run towards the cemetery, for example, to get support from the respawn there. If the villain can “Receive” the flag bearer alone here, it becomes dangerous for the enemy team. Of course, this strategy only works if the attacking squad puts a lot of pressure on the flag bearer and then stops the other defenders in the area.
  • In teamfights, all Dispellers focus on keeping the warrior glued to the focus target’s butt as much as possible to constant pressure and keep Mortal Strike’s healing-reducing effect active. If the target is badly damaged, sorcerers with death coils can ensure a certain “kill”.
  • When defending, your own flag bearer is best positioned on the roof. The advantages: 1) The opponents have to go through a narrow entrance that can be easily overlooked and defended. 2) The flag point is reachable with one jump. 3) There are several escape routes in an emergency.
  • If an offensive push fails, don’t make your way back from the graveyard to the enemy base one at a time! Strengthen the defenses in your base and clean up there until all characters are ready again. Then ride forward as one.
  • Your defense needs to announce early enough that your flag bearer will die soon enough for someone on offense to “re-pick” the flag before the opposing team gets a point. In such a situation, the top priority for everyone involved is to keep the enemy’s flag bearer away from the flag point and at the same time to get your new flag bearer safely into your own base.
  • ATTENTION: If you mount the flag with the mount or use abilities like God’s Shield, Ice Block, Vanish, Feign Dead or Blessing of Protection, you will automatically drop the flag! This can make sense in certain situations, such as when a rogue wants to escape from a frost nova and immediately picks up the flag again after disappearing. With such actions, however, there is always a risk that an opponent will click on the flag faster than you (especially if you also have to use a Cancelaura macro (for Ice Block, God’s Shield and Co.) to even pick up the flag again be able)!

Useful items for Warsong Gulch.

In WoW Classic, the same rules apply to instanced PvP as in vanilla WoW. Whether items from the raid area, potions, vials and elixirs, or consumables from an engineer’s workshop – everything is allowed in Warsong Gulch. So if you farm a lot of tools for PvP and also visit raids regularly, you’ll have a noticeable advantage in capture the flag games. Here are some particularly useful items for Warsong Gulch:

Free Action Potion : A mandatory potion for all flag bearers and flag bearer protectors who want to do their job to the best of their ability.
Regeneration Potion : Especially interesting for healers who want to minimize the risk of control effects when the enemy is pressing on their own flag bearer.
Potion of Speed: Can help, for example, to quickly bring the enemy flag to your own base.
Potion of Limited Invulnerability: Acts like a blessing of protection at the touch of a button.
Vial of Titans: Yes, vials are very expensive to produce. But 1,200 more health points? Some ambitious teams with aspiring rank 14 players won’t want to pass that up. Those who invest more will have a better chance of winning in the end.
Goblin Boots / Gnome Rocket Boots : The speed potion for the feet.
Gnome Net-o-Matic Projector : More control never hurts in a capture the flag game.
Mithril Shrapnel Bomb : Just one example of the Engineers explosive arsenal. Advantages of the Mithril Bomb : It’s fairly cheap, has decent range, and stuns the target.
Battle Standard : With Honor Rank 9, you can buy a Battle Standard from the PvP merchant, which gives you a decent health boost in crucial team fights.
Skull of Impending Doom: When you take damage yourself by using this item, effects like Transfiguration, Frost Trap, and Blindness are interrupted, which can be very interesting for healers when the enemy team is out to kill the flag bearer.
