WoW: Classic server and the dear class balancing

Since the announcement of the vanilla server for WoW, there has been a lot of discussion in the official Classic forums on Blizzard’s homepage. The fans are mainly concerned with the question of possible class adjustments that could provide better balancing. How could such balancing changes look like and would Classic still be Classic? Knowing what we know today, which class would you play again at level 60?

Since the announcement of the official Classic servers for World of Warcraft, there has been a heated debate among fans about what the game experience should actually look like. Blizzard has even opened an official forum on the homepage, which is being used diligently. There you can read discussions about possible changes again and again. Especially the topics of class balancing and possible adjustments to various specializations come up again and again. In the English-language forum, the discussion was even initiated by a community manager. Ythisens also openly admits that class balancing as a kind of design philosophy did not exist as it is today in World of Warcraft (buy now). But Ythisens also explains that Blizzard doesn’t automatically make big or even small changes. Ion Hazzikostas, on the other hand, explains that internally only the patch status for the official Classic servers is discussed, not elements that never existed in Classic.

“As J. [J. Allen Brack, editor’s note] explained at BlizzCon, we know that Vanilla means Vanilla to you guys. It’s about the community. It also means some discomfort or rough edges. We certainly don’t want to change that. Our question is more about which version brings back that feeling – is it the 2005 version of WoW or more like the 2006 version? In the Classic era, there were a lot of adjustments to the game. There’s a lot of discussion to figure out which Classic experience is the right one.”

So if Blizzard keeps its word and does indeed bring the original class balance, we wonder how players will handle it? It’s no secret that some classes in had more or less useless talent trees or were meant for very specific tasks. So how would this affect class distribution on a Classic server? Knowing what most players have today, there could well be an imbalance – after all, some players will only want to play classes that have a raid raison d’etre. Sure, some DpS classes may not have been damage machines, but they had important buffs and thus secured a place in a raid group. But would you play a level 60 class yourself for that task? If it is indeed about the feeling of that time,

That means that less optimal specializations also have to find a place – can that still work as well as it did back then? Personally, I would play a shadow priest. It doesn’t matter at all that leveling up to level 40 is just a cramp (and even in the endgame, the Shadow Priest is really only good for PvP and in PvE as a buff giver) – you do have to bring a bit of suffering to Classic. how do you see it? Would you play a class on a WoW Classic server that might not fit perfectly in the endgame and has many shortcomings? Or with the knowledge you have today, would you go for a class that has a place in any raid group? Let us know in the comments!

What is WoW Classic?

is a true recreation of the original WoW as you know it from 2006. All parts of the game – from combat mechanics and talent trees to character models and zones – have been recreated, contributing to the authentic experience.
