Update from January 29th, 2021: Based on the new video of Sno from Classic Roguecraft, we have added new items to the list of tips and tricks for Naxxramas. You can recognize them by the “NEW”.

How to deal maximum damage with your rogue in Naxxramas

With phase 6 of WoW Classic, the gates of Naxxramas have finally opened and a whopping 15 bosses are waiting to be knocked down and looted by us. In contrast to some other classes, we can hardly expect any special tasks. In almost every fight we can concentrate on what we do best: Cause damage. Below are tips and tricks for the bosses, but also some general recommendations.

Daggers or swords in Naxx?

If you look at the current Top 10 (as of December 18, 2020) of top logs on Warcraftlogs, you’ll notice: Nine out of ten rogues carry swords (Rank 14 , Thunder Wrath plus Chromatic Hardened Sword, or Ancient Qirajizer Fetzer plus Offhand Weapon). At first glance, this is surprising; after all, the best dagger combination from the AQ40 tier is better than the best sword combination from the Phase 5 tier in terms of damage potential. Also, there are many bosses in Naxxramas where you can just stand behind the boss and go full throttle – dagger villains love that.

However, the Top 30 is all Alliance rogues, and many of those rogues are human to take the weapon kill bonus for swords. Clearly, these rely on swords whenever possible. In addition, sword rogues enjoy tangible advantages on some bosses – Thaddius, for example, where you can’t get behind the boss at times, or whenever boss and servant are knocked down at the same time. Whether this preference for swords remains the same will also depend on which weapons drop for your raid and when. The daggers and swords available with Naxx are equally big upgrades, and since many warriors will also be keen on the swords, dagger rogues might find it easier to get their desired items – and then deal higher damage.

How to prepare your rogue for Naxx in the best possible way

In Naxxramas, almost only undead await you, which you should take into account for your preparation for Naxxramas. Only Maexxna (wild animal) and Faerlina (humanoid) do not fall into this category. So get:

  • Holy Water from Stratholme (Engineers can of course continue to use Goblin Pioneer Charge as an alternative).
  • Consecrated Whetstones from the Scourge (Alliance players use these on both weapons, Horde players with Shaman in the party use them on secondary hands)
  • The Seal of Dawn trinket

What about the Undead Slayer armor?

During the Scourge event, you were able to earn the Undead Slayer’s three-piece armor, which promises you an enormous amount of attack power when fighting undead, as well as an exciting set bonus (Increases the damage you do against undead by 2%.). However, there are so few other stats on the pieces that, on balance, you should do significantly more damage with equipment from the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj or even the Pitchwing Hoard. There is only one exception: when fighting Thaddius, you receive such a powerful DpS buff that the percentage damage increase of the set suddenly becomes enormous. So if you want to deal maximum damage in this fight, you can think about using the set here. But again, a Phase 6 BS set delivers more total damage.

How good is the Tier 3 set?

Let’s keep it short: The Bone Scythe armor is really good for rogues. In the long run, you’ll want to own eight of the nine set pieces to activate all the bonuses. The bonuses for four and eight pieces are especially powerful. The best case scenario is to add C’Thun’s Belt of Endless Torment to the other eight Tier 3 pieces. Caution: Sword Rogues should not break the 5-piece bonus from the T-2.5 set until they can replace two or even three pieces at once. Also, in direct comparison, individual T3 parts are not much of an upgrade, if any, to the BiS counterpart from Phase 5. The strength of the Tier 3 set comes primarily from the aforementioned bonuses.

Rogue Tips and Tricks for the Bosses in Naxxramas

  • In general, for most fights, pull your damage-increasing options early (and at the same time) and use Disappear after the damage phase so you don’t have to worry about your aggro until the rest of the fight. In longer fights, this gives you short CDs a second time.
  • Also important: Only living rogues deal damage. So use resistance potions, invulnerability potions, and consumables that increase your health to ensure your survival and benefit from the world buffs for as long as possible.
  • Especially in the progression, it can happen that the tanks die and the boss suddenly looks at your rogue. In our raid, rogues with activated Escape have successfully tanked bosses (Patchwerk, Loatheb, Razuvious) long enough to still make the kill possible. Of course, this only works if you’re alert and quick to react!
  • At Noth, wait with Blade Vortex and your other damage-increasing abilities until the first adds have appeared and been brought to the boss.
  • Of course, don’t fire your damage-boosting abilities on Loatheb until your party has collected the Mushroom Spore.
  • NEW: You can counter Loatheb’s first IMPOSSIBLE FATE with Disappearance. The boss always casts the first attack 8.5 seconds before the associated Deadly Boss Mods timer expires. If you use Disappear just before that, you will be immune to the shadow damage. All subsequent IMMUNITY DAMAGE will then no longer match the DBM timer one hundred percent.
  • NEW: Due to the increased crit chance from Loatheb’s spore, it is worth adjusting your equipment before the fight. There are two available to you. Number 1: Increase your hit chance as much as possible to increase your crit cap. Number 2: Wear four pieces of the T-0.5 set for the strong set bonus and increase your hit chance as much as possible on the other pieces of equipment.
On Anub’Rekhan, pull the two adds and the boss together at the beginning to get as much cleave damage out early. Swallow a Potion of Free Action so you don’t get zapped.
  • With Faerlina, you can do tremendous damage right at the start, and that’s when your raid pulls some of the adds right up to the boss to knock them out of existence with Cleave damage. In that case, of course, you’ll want to use Blade Vortex and the like early on.
  • With Maexxna, you can reliably avoid the gossamer shower with the right timing via disappearance. If you manage to do this, you can continue to pummel the boss while all the other players are ninja’d, or finish off any still-living adds. This is especially recommended for the first or third (during the Enrage phase) Goblin Shower, depending on how much damage your raid does.
  • Drop a Goblin Pioneer Blast as soon as the adds show up at Maexxna. You can also use Blade Whirl to catch the Adds if you position yourself well, increasing your damage.
  • Fire Blade Vortex at Grobbulus as soon as the first add appears. Also, position yourself behind the leg closest to the wall. Now, when the boss turns around to the caster camp to dispense his debuff, continue to stand behind the boss.
  • On Gluth, use Holy Water from Stratholme to bomb away the adds after Decimate. Damage-increasing effects are best detonated immediately after the boss’s Fear spell.
  • NEW: With Gluth, there are several ways for rogues to avoid the fear effect. The first fear effect has a fairly high chance of arriving on time with the DBM timer, so you can counter it quite reliably with Disappear. You can then avoid the second fear effect with Limited Invulnerability Potion, since it actually counts as a physical spell. Since the effect of LiP lasts for a total of six seconds, it is quite feasible to use the potion in time before the next fear. Other options: Dwarven Priests’ Fear Spell Protection, Will of the Forsaken of Undead, and positioning the boss across the gate so that the melee fighters can disappear behind the gate edge before each fear effect.
  • Tip for the phase transition with Thaddius: if you ignite Sprint, you’ll get across the divide safely even if you mess up the jump.
  • In the second phase of the fight against Thaddius, it’s not up to you whether you’re behind or in front of the boss. For dagger rogues this can become a problem. It’s best to use a simple weapon switching macro to switch from a dagger to a sword or other strong main hand weapon when Thaddius looks at you.

/equipslot 16 Name of the dagger

/equipslot 16 name of the sword

  • Hold off on your damage-increasing options on Thaddius until you fully benefit from the DpS buff. Dagger Rogues also wait until the boss turns his back on them.
  • NEW: Since the powerful DpS buff on Thaddius briefly disappears after each polarity change, Sword Rogues in particular can use this brief period to regenerate energy. As soon as the buff is back, you can then invest the Make sure that you never reach the energy maximum, this always means a DpS loss!
  • In Gothic, the add phase is crucial. The boss itself is hardly a challenge in the last phase. So use your damage-increasing abilities as needed when too many adds show up on your side. It’s best to wear trinkets that promise you passive effects around the clock.
  • With the four horsemen, it’s hugely important that Thane and Morgraine die as quickly as possible, which makes the fight noticeably easier. So knock everything out early and watch your aggro as you do so. With better equipment, more and more guilds will start to pull Morgraine and Thane together and nuke them away in cleave. Some guilds are already doing this.
NEW: The DBM timers for the Four Horsemen curses are very accurate. You can reliably use vanish to avoid one of the curses (and thus increase the uptime on a boss).
  • On Sapphiron, rogues can use Disappearance to avoid what should be a deadly frost breath. Use the ability just before the orb touches the ground. If you succeed, you can continue to damage the flying Sapphiron with your style attacks until then (your automatic attacks won’t hit, similar to Onyxia). This trick is also useful for escaping breathing when the saving ice blocks are too far away.
  • In the fight against Kel’Thuzad, your main priority is to interrupt the boss’s Frostbolt. Pay attention to your disposition and always keep enough energy to kick the spell when it’s your turn.

How to deal maximum damage with your rogue in AQ40

With Phase 5 and the opening of Ahn’Qiraj, a new 40-player challenge has landed on the Classic servers, which sets a total of nine bosses on us players: the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj. The fights against the nasties are different for us rogues than in MC and BWL. Let’s first clarify the most important questions below, then we’ll go into tips for the individual bosses.

Dagger or sword in AQ40?

WoW Classic: More rogue tips and tricks for NaxxramasIf you look at the top logs in the Classic section of the Warcraftlogs website for the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj, you’ll notice that many of the top-ranked villains used swords. There is one main reason for this: in some battles in the temple, dagger rogues are at a clear positional disadvantage, as they are required to stand behind the victim in order to assassinate. In chaotic battles like Skeram and Sartura, however, this is not so easy. The first phase of the encounter with C’Thun is even more merciless. There the melee fighters have to stay on their assigned positions, while the eye moves restlessly back and forth and you always have the boss’ front in front of your nose.

So if you have equal daggers and swords in your inventory or on the bench, it’s better to go for swords, at least in the beginning. Now comes the but! With Blessed Qirajipugio and especially Stab of Death, you can earn two dagger upgrades in the temple that not only make the sword counterparts from the Tough Luck Hoard, but also the Ancient Qirajizer Fetzer
from Fankriss. Once the new Blades are dropped more frequently, Dagger Rogues will start showing up in the top logs more and more often.

How good is the Tier 0.5 set of Rogues in AQ40?

Prior to the launch of Phase 5, we had recommended that you get the materials for the Tier 0.5 quest line and start upgrading the Rogue dungeon set with the release of the Ahn’Qiraj patch. After all, on paper (read: in the simulations), an equipment set with four pieces of the Tier 0.5 set is well ahead of the previously valid Phase 4 best-in-slot set.

However, there was a small question mark behind the strength of the set in practice. After all, the value of the upgraded dungeon set is based on a set bonus that happens to provide us with 35 energy. If things go stupid, the proc comes at exactly the wrong time and we waste the resource bonus. But again, a look at the top rogue logs makes it clear that many of the best results were caused by the Tier 0.5 set. However, as soon as you have the chance to put on the Tier 2.5 set from Ahn’Qiraj, you should do so.

Tips and tricks for each boss in the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj.

  • Most rogues so far in Skeram refrain from drawing blade whirls to attack the boss plus the illusions on a platform at the same time. There’s a high risk of accidentally knocking out a player you’ve taken over.
  • If you are assigned to interrupt Skeram’s Arcane Blast, always keep enough Energy back for Kritt. No one in your raid should eat damage unnecessarily just because you want to push your logs. Thistle Tea and Renataki’s Amulet of Trickery plug energy holes when needed.
  • It’s best to use your damage-boosting abilities like Adrenaline Rush on Skeram right at the beginning to quickly beat the boss to 75 percent, or in the middle part of the fight when you’re attacking the boss and not the illusions. Also, outer platform rogues can quietly attack the boss in the middle at the beginning and then switch to their actual position at about 80 percent.
  • If you look at the best rogue logs on the trio of beetles, one thing quickly stands out: Many raid groups simply pull the three bugs together to maximize the damage they deal. Accordingly, Blade Vortex’s share of damage in the logs is large. Just be careful not to get stuck in the poisonous area left behind by the deceased Lord Kri. That one really hurts!
  • In Sartura, rogues take on a special role: using Nasty Trick and Kidney Chop, they stun the boss as well as the servants to allow players a few moments to deal damage safely.
If you are assigned to stun a Servant of Sartura right at the start of the fight, you can do so as follows: ride or run with the tanks on the pull, greet your assigned mob with Sinister Strike, switch to Stealth via Disappearance, use Nasty Trick, build up five combo points, follow up with a Kidney Chop.
  • If your raid can control all three minions (and maybe even the boss) in close proximity to each other in this way, you’ll be able to get very high damage numbers right from the start thanks to Blade Vortex and other damage-increasing options.
  • Do not underestimate the vortex of Sartura and the servants! Thanks to Escape and a subsequent Limited Invulnerability Potion, you can stay in Sartura’s vortex for almost an entire phase and continue to deal full damage. If you do get hit during Escape, a Health Stone will take care of it or you can ignite your Invulnerability Potion early on.
  • The fight against Fankriss is super simple. Ignite your damage-increasing abilities as early as possible to get the most out of them before the first worm appears. Help knock it down as quickly as possible, and then continue to go full throttle on the boss.
  • How much damage you do to Huhuran depends on your raid strategy. The absolute best logs will only be obtained if you start the fight without natural resistance and get through the 30 percent phase so quickly that no one dies from the poison volley – yes, this is possible, but not without danger. Especially in the first weeks we advise you to use a conservative strategy with maximum natural resistance for all assigned interceptors of the volley.
  • The fight against Huhuran itself is not very exciting. Divide your damage-increasing options so that they are fully available to you in the 30% phase. Prepare a long enough chop beforehand and throw in another Great Nature Resistance Potion just before the phase.
  • The fight against the twin emperors is very long. So long, in fact, that you can use your damage-increasing abilities multiple times. So activate Adrenaline Rush, Blade Vortex and co. as early as possible. Preferably after the first teleport, when the has more aggro to fall back on than right after the pull and you can go full throttle on the melee twin shortly after the teleport thanks to good positioning or sprinting.
  • If you’ve already built up some combo points on the melee twin just before a run phase and chop is about to expire, take advantage of it! Keep an eye on your opponent as you cross the room to avoid losing the points again, and cast Chop just before you blast to attack again.
  • Due to the short combat phases and at the same time the very long duration of the fight against the twins, it is worthwhile to use actively usable trinkets such as Renataki’s Amulet of Trickery, Earth Strike or Jom Gabbar, they are very strong here.
  • The melee twin is immune to your poisons. Use whetstones instead.
  • When fighting Viscidus, you won’t get too high damage numbers – thanks to Nature Resistance gear and Frost weapons. However, you can get a bit more DpS out of your rogue if you switch to your normal weapons via macro (see below) immediately after freezing the boss.

#showtooltip
/equipslot 16 Glacial blade
/equipslot 16 Chromatic hardened sword
/equipslot 17 Cold rage dagger
/equipslot 17 Maladath, rune-embellished blade of the black dragonflight

  • You’ll also get the best logs on Viscidus if your raid bombs the little blobs out of existence in just one stage. However, this requires packing as many engineers with Goblin Pioneer Charges as possible. The explosive charges are also useful on other bosses, such as when you bundle Satura and Servants in one spot or when a boss of the Beetle Trio has many small beetles appear after its demise.
  • With Ouro, enormously high damage numbers are possible if your raid plays down the fight cleanly and your tanks build up enough aggro. Plan your damage-boosting options so that you use them either right at the start or after the initial knockback. Disappear, Feint, and Limited Invulnerability Potion can be used to counter the aggro problem if needed.
  • Disappearance and Limited Invulnerability Potion are great for avoiding sweeper knockback on Ouro, by the way. If we add Escape, you can even counter the boss’s attack three times. It’s best to use Disappearance on the second or third sweep, because by then the threat you’ve created should have reached a dangerous level. However, activate the ability just before Sweep of Ouro is finished casting to avoid the knockback as well as the damage.
  • With C’Thun, it’s especially important that all of your damage-increasing abilities are available when both tentacles in the stomach are destroyed and the crucial DpS phase on the Old God begins. Depending on how long you have Phase 1 and 2, you may be able to fire the DpS CDs (only the ones with lower cooldowns if necessary) right at the beginning of the fight – you don’t have to worry about aggro.
  • If C’Thun sends his beam 180 degrees across the room in phase 1, you can continue to deal damage to him the entire time. Just make sure the eye isn’t facing your exact direction before the boss casts the beam, and then of course at the end of the beam phase you should be standing in your assigned position.
  • Move to C’Thun’s back (towards the entrance) just before the DpS phase. If you attack the Old Boss from the throne side, your attacks can be parried with bad luck, and Dagger Rogues can’t use Assassination here. On the other side, you don’t have these problems.

Which rogue play style does more damage?

The answer to this question depends on many factors. Basically, it can be said that many bosses in Molten Core are easier for you to achieve high damage values as a sword rogue, since it is sometimes difficult to stand in the back of the target for the entire time as a dagger wielder in the melee – and that is exactly where you have to position yourself if you want to use assassination or ambush.

The challenges in the Pitchwing Lair, on the other hand, are made for dagger rogues: there’s usually only one target that barely moves, so it’s no problem to constantly pummel the boss’s back. Of course, your equipment also plays a role. A sword rogue with Vis’kag the Bloodshedder and Merciless Blade will lose out in BWL to colleagues with Blade of and Core Dogtooth (with an otherwise comparable starting position). However, this changes once the Chromatically Hardened Sword and Maladath, Rune-Encrusted Blade of the Black Dragonflight land in the hands of the Blademaster.

The most important buffs for maximum damage

If you want to cause maximum damage in WoW Classic – and this applies to all classes – you have to make full use of the numerous and often enormously powerful buff options available in the game. We present the most important buffs and DpS-consumbles for rogues in the following.

The most important world buffs for rogues

If you want to deal maximum damage, you should stock up on the following world buffs before the raid:

  • Warchief’s Blessing (Horde only).
  • Battlecry of the Dragon Slayers
  • Mol’Dar’s Courage (buff No. 1 from Bleak Quarry North)
  • Fengus’ Fierceness (buff no. 2 from Bleak Quarry North)
  • Slip’kik’s Grips (Buff – No. 3 from Bleak Quarry North, increases your damage with the poisons)
  • Sayge’s Dark Fate of Damage (only available when Darkmoon Faire is open, select answers 1 and 1)
  • Song Flower Serenade (by clearing a Corrupted Song Flower in the Devil’s Forest)
  • Spirit of Zandalar (from the opening of Zul’Gurub)
  • Ground Scorpok Ingredient Sample (through repeatable quest Salt of the Scorpok in the Desolate Lands, you can only have one sample at a time)

The most important DpS consumables

In addition to the above buffs, you should fortify yourself with the following DpS consumables before each battle:

  • Instant Poison VI (Alliance: on both weapons, Horde: only on secondary hand if Shaman is in the party).
  • Elixir of Mungo
  • Grilled Squid
  • Power of Juju
  • Power of Juju

If you don’t want to invest so much gold per raid, there are cheaper consumables alternatives (maximum DpS is not possible then, of course):

  • Elixir of Great Agility (alternative for Elixir of Mungo)
  • Firewater of the winter skins (alternative for Power of Juju)
  • Elixir of Giants (alternative for Power of Juju)

More damage at the push of a button with these consumables

Since we’re talking about Classic WoW, there are several other consumables you can use to further boost your damage:

  • Thistle Tea
  • Goblin Pioneer Charge / Dense Dynamite / Thorium Grenade (Engineers only)
  • Oil of Fire
  • Dragon Demchili
  • Holy Water of Stratholme (AoE alternative for non-engineers at Nefarian)
  • Crystal Blast (AoE alternative for non-engineers, brings 10 red and 10 yellow power crystals to the northern pylon in Un’Goro Crater)

CAUTION: While Hail of Juju promises a DpS boost from increased attack speed in the tooltip, the developers have confirmed that your character’s damage will be reduced at the same time.

Non-DpS consumables that increase your DpS

Non-DpS consumables that increase your DpS? Sounds strange, but it’s true! The following consumables, while not directly increasing your damage, often result in higher DpS when used correctly.

  • Resistance potions like Great Fire Potion
  • Potion of Free Action (FAP for short)
  • Limited Invulnerability Potion (LIP for short)
  • Regeneration Potion

Since only living rogues can deal damage and you don’t want to lose your World Buffs and Consumables by dying unnecessarily, it naturally makes sense to further increase your survivability. For example with:

  • Vial of the Titans
  • Heavy rune cloth bandage
  • Whip root nodules
  • Considerable healing potion
  • Embers of Juju
  • Black Rumsey Rum
  • Elixir of Soul Strength
  • Fire resistance buff of the spellbinders of the butterfly shields in UBRS (through mind control, gives 83 fire resistance for one hour)

Tips and tricks for maximum damage in MC and BWL

In the following we want to give you some general tips, but also specific tricks for certain raid bosses, with which you can increase the damage of your rogue.

The battle opening with Limited Invulnerability Potion

One of the biggest advantages of a rogue is that it can zero out its threat with Disappearance at the touch of a button. This advantage allows us, for example, to start the fight tremendously aggressive, especially if we throw in a Limited Invulnerability Potion just before the pull. The potion ensures that the immunity threat built up in the next few seconds doesn’t affect the boss. So, thanks to the potion, you can go full throttle from the first second while the tank is actually still “fueling” the target. Shortly before the effect expires, you then activate Disappear to completely remove the threat you built up during that time. Some practical experience on this:

  • Really only use this opening when Disappear is ready. Otherwise, the boss will give you his full attention after Limited Invulnerability Potion expires.
  • For some bosses, it makes more sense to use potions like Potion of Free Action that are on the same cooldown.
  • Disappearance comes very early on this opening, earlier than normal. If for some reason the tank can’t build threat normally, you run the risk of aggro problems later on despite Disappearance. Also with Vaelastrasz in BWL you should be very careful – depending on the aggro buildup of your tank – especially with daggers.
  • This opening doesn’t really pay off in boss fights with adds (of which there are quite a few in MC), where you target a minion first. If you do draw aggro here due to your aggressiveness, you can safely tank the add with Escape for some time if need be (and throw in a Limited Invulnerability Potion later if needed).
  • Test out this opening in MC first, as it’s comparatively safe here if you do pull aggro. Meanwhile, in BWL, if you miss the use of Disappear just before Limited Invulnerability Potion expires, the worst case scenario is that one of the dragons looks into the raid while it is casting Shadow Flame.

The optimal use of the cooldowns

As a rogue, you have two abilities that can boost your damage noticeably for a short time, and you want to use them in every fight if possible (but sometimes you can’t, because some cooldowns are still running when the next boss is due): Adrenaline Rush and Blade Whirl. Here are a few basic tips on how to use them:

  • Use the two abilities in combination if possible. Adrenaline Rush especially pushes Blade Vortex’s damage when there are multiple enemies within striking range (we only deviate from this rule in Onyxia’s Lair. Here we hold off Blade Vortex for the Puppy phase. Adrenaline Rush, on the other hand, is used in direct battles with the Brood Mother).
  • Also, make sure that you can pummel your victim undisturbed in the 15 seconds after activation. This includes renewing Chop with five combo points shortly beforehand.
  • In any fight with multiple opponents, optimal use of Blade Vortex is crucial to your overall damage. With Lucifron and Gehennas, many raids simply pull servants and bosses together. Of course, if that’s the case for you, you’ll want to whip out Adrenaline Rush and Blade Vortex as soon as all the enemies are positioned in one spot. Majordomus is similar: if there’s a phase where you kill several of the minions in one spot, then your damage-increasing effects should run.
  • For the BWL bosses with add phases (Razorgore and Nefarian), use Blade Vortex (without Adrenaline Rush) as early as possible. Because of the attack’s fairly short cooldown, it will be available to you again later in the actual boss phase.

What is WoW Classic?

is a true recreation of the original WoW as you know it from 2006. All parts of the game – from combat mechanics and talent trees to character models and zones – have been recreated, contributing to the authentic experience.
