In the official WoW Classic forum, the topic “Epic World Drop” has been hotly debated in several threads for a few days. First, because the community can’t agree on when to choose need and when greed. On the other hand, some players are convinced that Blizzard is adjusting the drop chances for rare items upwards in the background in order to benefit streamers. With or without an aluminum hat – let’s discuss it!
A couple of weeks ago, we already addressed a few issues that the WoW Classic community was pretty… well… upset about . At least for the topic “role-playing server for the German area” there was a happy ending in the meantime. For this, in the official forum of WoW (buy now) Classic has been hotly discussing the “Epic World Drop” event in several threads for a few days. For example, the thread “RANDOM BOE EPIC – ALL NEED” has accumulated almost 900 comments , in which the community simply cannot agree on when need and when greed should be chosen.
For one camp it is clear: need means need because you have a need for the item. In other words, you select this option as soon as you want to use the item, i.e. want to learn it or create it. Greed, on the other hand, is used as soon as you want to enrich yourself financially with the item, i.e. want to put it on the auction house or sell it in another way. It actually sounds self-explanatory so far.
But there is also a very large group of players who do not stick to it and choose particularly valuable drops as needed if they only want to sell the part. Her reasoning: On the one hand, you can’t trust players you don’t know. Who knows whether someone who specifies a need will later sell the part after all. On the other hand, such an epic world drop is often such a large financial upgrade that the need is definitely justified. You can pay for your epic mount, afford significant armor or weapon upgrades, or save hours of farming. The fairest variant is therefore when everyone rolls the dice equally (we also had the most unfair one, Roysun was not? Namely suggest greed to the group and at the end as the only player click on need. Pooh!).
Karsten’s opinion on this: Since the opinions and views on this topic differ so widely, in my view there is no point in relying on the “need only when really needed” etiquette. Agreements are necessary. When I go to Stratholme “Living” with non-guildmates, I always do a quick rundown on how we handle the Righteous Orbs. Most of the time we agree on “Anyone needs it. If you have a ball, you pass it so that as many players as possible get one”. With such “roll all” agreements, you should always prioritize need over greed so that something like the Roysun case (see above) cannot happen.
As far as epic World Drops are concerned, it is of course not worth discussing the loot rules in advance each time. The parts just drop too rarely for that. In other words: the topic only comes up when such an epic has actually been dropped, and then you have to agree. Personally, I would always prioritize real needs over sales, and also pass if someone can use (equip or learn (on a recipe)) an epic drop.
For example, yesterday I was in Dire Maul with three guildmates and a “random mage” – and the Skullflame Shielddropped. The part was a big upgrade for our tank and of course we told the magician. At the same time, I passed to show: we don’t want to enrich ourselves with it, but equip our warrior. The mage passed as well, the warrior bagging the shield and donning it right away to prove his need. There was a big thank you, the magician congratulated our tank, everyone continued to play happily. This is of course the best case. If you meet players who follow a completely different loot philosophy than you do, there is only one thing left for you: remember the name of the character and stop moving around with it. You will not convince the other camp with your arguments, as the thread mentioned at the beginning showed very clearly.
The second thread is more of an oddity and the title already suggests why: ” WHY DO SO MANY STREAMERS HAVE SO MANY RARE ITEMS? “. Or to put it another way: How can it be that all the well-known WoW streamers are walking around with various epic items that have a minimal chance of dropping? The case is clear for quite a few players: Blizzard is working on the drop chances in the background to keep their streamers happy – so that they don’t lose interest in Classic and continue to advertise the game with their streams. At the end of the day there is too much money involved to leave anything to chance.
Karsten’s opinion on this: The whole discussion reminds me of some threads from the vanilla era. At that time there were no influencers, so the existence of shadow accounts (those with a lot of drop luck) and sun accounts (those with a lot of drop luck) was discussed. Because even then, the loot in WoW was distributed very unevenly. For example, some guilds could not equip a single player with Sulfuras or Thunderfury due to a lack of drops, while others ran several characters with the legendary weaponshereabouts. At that time, swords never wanted to drop in our raid, but we were able to equip more than half a dozen villains with the blade of corruption and the mange rib. It looked different with other raids on the server, the disenchanted Vis’kag and the merciless blade even at some point.
Back to WoW Classic: Even now there are lucky and unlucky people, including known and unknown. With large streamers, however, there are two additional factors that can at least cushion Droppech a little: On the one hand, WoW streamers, who use it to pay their rent, have been playing the game full-time since the release and have a corresponding number of hours on the clock. So it’s quite likely that you’ve stumbled across one or the other epic world drop in four weeks. On the other hand, the really big streamers are often supported by their fans – sometimes with gold, sometimes with BoE drops, sometimes by passing on a valuable item.
In addition, there are numerous lucky ones who do not stream at all or only for a handful of viewers. Just how many epic world drops our guild has already found in Dire Maul East or Zul’farrak (Mage, I’m looking at you!) … If you want to discuss something, it’s more about whether the drop chances of epic world drops in Classic actually correspond to the vanilla period. But please don’t let Blizzard selectively manipulate the loot chances in the background to paint influencers on their stomachs. That’s absurd.
