WoW Class Race Restrictions: Up to Date?

In an interview, Lead Combat Designer Brian Holinka proclaims that. with WoW: new class-people will come into the game. With this, Blizzard wants to give WoW players fewer limits on character creation in the future. A good start, but WoW players want more! On the net, fans are discussing whether Blizzard shouldn’t lift the current class restrictions completely.

From meme to reality

Holinka surprised the WoW community with this news. Blizzard resisted putting WoW’s gentle giants into a rogue costume for a long time. And let’s face it, hardly any players can imagine a stately Taurean as a “sneaky assassin.” Tauren rogues were a meme for years, nothing more. However, the aforementioned joke will become a reality in the near future! Finally, Blizzard throws the concerns overboard and announces that with Patch 10.0 there will be new class-race combinations.

Holinka: We’re working towards that but not all classes have the same kinda content requirements. More of this will come over time, but immediately in 10.0 we’re gonna be making Rogues, Mages and Priests available for all races, so everyone will be able to go out and make their sneaky Tauren Rogue tiptoeing on their hooves all around.

With that, players can look forward to these nine class-race combos with Dragonflight:

  • Tauren Mage
  • High Mountain Tauren Mage
  • Orc priest
  • Mag’har Orc Priest
  • High Mountain Tauren Priest
  • Tauren Rogue
  • High Mountain Tauren Rogue
  • Draenei Rogue
  • Light forged draenei rogue

No players really believed that Tauren and Draenei rogues would actually come into the game one day. Now the community is going wild! If Tauren Rogues and Orc Priests exist, what other class-race combos are possible?

An unfulfilled dream or soon reality?

The restrictions on class-race combinations are no longer up to date, at least that’s what a large portion of WoW players think. Currently, the Nightborn Druids and Night Elf Paladins are the most popular. Paladins from the Gnome and Kul Tiran people are also in demand, as are Zandalari warlocks and human shamans.

Blizzard linked the previous class-race combinations to the history of each race. For example, the night elves have not been allowed to take the career of a mage for a long time. The developers explained this by the fact that the classical teachings of magic were frowned upon in the society of the night elves that lived Teldrassil. These Kaldorei blamed the Highborne for the great catastrophe that tore the world to pieces 10,000 years ago.

In Cataclysm, however, the first Highborne appeared in Darnassus and offered their help to Tyrande and co. Blizzard wrapped this story in a few dialogues and quests that explained why players are allowed to play Night Elf Mages from now on. There was a similar story for Druids of the Darkspear Trolls in Cataclysm. The developers could theoretically apply this little trick to all class-race combos. If Blizzard is already going to let all races choose the priest class, why not just continue with paladins?

There’s no reason that heroes who have a connection to the Light can’t also wear plate armor and wield a battle hammer. The best example of this is some night elves that in WoW. (buy now ): Legion have joined the Order of the Silver Hand. And at the latest with the priests from the ranks of the Mag’har orcs, any excuse with the lore would be obsolete. And let’s face it, theoretically you can link any religion to the Paladin class. In the past, Blizzard has done this well with paladins from the Tauren and Zandalari trolls.

New freedoms make the game more fun

Classes in WoW have long ceased to be about story or even tradition. Blizzard seems to be rethinking this as of late. In the future, there will no longer be any real faction boundaries, so why should the developers still cling to class restrictions? The races of the Horde and Alliance have been exchanging with each other for years. The monks led the way in Mists of Pandaria, accepting any student willing to learn, regardless of race or faction. The gnomes learned the hunter’s craft in WoW: Legion, and the Tauren pick up two rogue daggers in Dragonflight. And the Dracthyr are also free to choose which faction they want to join. In WoW nothing is impossible anymore! Perhaps a Zandalari troll will soon want to follow the ways of a warlock. And that demon hunters will one day share their knowledge with other races, we already know from past Blizzard interviews.

What do you think about the topic of restrictions on class-race combinations in WoW? Should Blizzard remove all restrictions between classes and races? Or would it rather continue to focus on the story and make some class-race combos impossible? And Which race-class combo would you most like to see in WoW: Dragonflight?
