WoW: Burning Crusade Launch – This was the start on January 16, 2007

On June 2, 2021 at the stroke of midnight, that is, on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, the wheel of time will turn back again and the very successful World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade will be released as a “Classic” version. In this special we’ll get you in the mood for the launch with pictures from 2007. Have fun with it!

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (TBC or BC for short) is the first expansion for World of Warcraft. It was announced on October 28, 2005 and released on January 16, 2007 in North America, Europe and Australia. Its main features include an increase in the level cap to 70, the introduction of the Blood Elves and Draenei as playable races, and Outland with many new zones, dungeons, items, quests and monsters. The expansion was available in two versions: Standard Edition and Collector’s Edition.

In preparation for The Burning Crusade, Blizzard released Patch 2.0.1 in North America and Europe on December 5, 2006. This patch introduced some content from The Burning Crusade before the expansion itself was released – including an overhaul of the honor system, arena skirmishes, and a new Quest for Party interface. System requirements remained virtually unchanged from the original World of Warcraft, with the exception of an increase in required network bandwidth (from 56K dial-up to a broadband connection).

Historically, the expansion is a direct continuation of the original World of Warcraft. It takes players to Outland, the former world of Draenor, where they can explore the zones on their own through numerous quests. The main storyline features Illidan, the traitor, and what has happened to him over the last four years. Players can also complete quests that either help Illidan or prepare his downfall.

In addition, there are many connections between the former world of Draenor and the current Outland, such as Medivh’s opening of the Dark Portal, which is relived in the Caverns of Time, and various quest lines that provide insight into the history of the ancient orcish shamans and their relationship with the Burning Legion long before the First War. The focus is also on the two new playable races and their involvement in the game’s plot. Many plot holes will be filled with quests that connect the Blood Elves to the Horde and the Draenei to the Alliance.

You can check out original images from the launch month of January 2007 in the gallery below. From the crowds at the Dark Portal to the first steps with a Blood Elf and Draenei hunter to impressions from Outland, there is plenty of nostalgia. The first level 70 character in the world is also included. Have fun watching!
