WoW: What’s with the hate against WotLK Classic?
In the coming months, Wrath of the Lich King Classic is not just another WoW era re-release awaiting us. This time, the most successful expansion in the history of World of Warcraft is on the agenda. Twelve million paying subscribers … that’s still a unique success in the field of online role-playing games with a Buy2Play system and mandatory subscription.
But not only the pure player numbers make WotLK the most successful WoW expansion of all time, but also the retrospective evaluation of the community. In countless polls, the Northrend adventure was voted the most popular or best WoW addon (here an example from 2021), often with a large gap.
Anger instead of hype – Where are the WotLK fans?
I myself would call Wrath of the Lich King a very good (if not the best) WoW expansion, with which I had a lot of fun at the time and with which I associate many fond memories to this day. I’m sure many WoW veterans feel the same way. When WoW Classic was announced, however, I was much more excited about the chance to visit the original Azeroth and catch up on some of the content I had missed (for example, parts of the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj and Naxxramas).
Others apparently fared … well … differently. Again and again I read in the comments: “WoW Classic will only be a transition, I’m keen on WotLK Classic!“, or later then: “Oh TBC, yes, I’ll take that or maybe not, but with WotLK Classic I’m then definitely at the start!“. Preferably, these players would probably have fast-forwarded the time to be able to travel to Northrend immediately.
Since it can’t be done, patience was the order of the day. Patience that will soon pay off. The beta is already running, the Release could be in September 2022 is imminent. But so far there is hardly any anticipation to be felt, namely only when I hang around in the international communities of certain Classic streamers/Youtubers or Wrath Discord channels. From many of the comments here on buffed, Facebook and the like, I can only read anger instead of anticipation. The criticism expressed in many places makes no sense to me at all.
Criticism number 1: Blizzard just rehashes old content
This point of criticism is not new, of course. It already existed in WoW (buy now ) Classic and TBC Classic. Often supplemented with an insult, because all those who have fun with Classic content must obviously be dumbed-down idiots. What the critics here forget: Blizzard did NOT want to develop Classic (“You think you do, but you don’t”). The community had to fight for years to get these Classic variants. And even when the developers decided to relaunch Vanilla WoW, they were obviously sure that it would only be something for a small niche – which can be seen, among other things, in how few servers Blizzard wanted to make available for the launch of WoW Classic.
Speaking of servers: The population sizes of the WoW Classic and TBC Classic servers pulverized Blizzard’s expectations. Or put another way: There is a relevant need and a great desire for classic WoW content. You don’t have to be able to understand that. But if you don’t want to be a “§”§$”$%%, you could be happy about the fact that Blizzard has been meeting this demand for several years. Especially since nothing is taken away from you by it.
If we recall Activision Blizzard’s quarterly reports from the past few years, one could even argue that the successes of WoW Classic and TBC Classic made up for the weak periods of Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands (aside from launch sales, there was hardly anything to celebrate here in recent years) to a certain extent. Without WoW Classic and TBC Classic, who knows if Dragonflight would even exist in its announced form this year?!
Last but not least, I want to note that Blizzard is now not just rehashing old content in the Classic section. That may have been the case in WoW Classic, but since then the strategy has clearly evolved from #nochanges to #somechanges or even #manychanges (- Season of the championship). Which brings us to the second point of criticism that directly affects WotLK.
