World of Starcraft or WoW 2 after all? Blizzard has new role-playing game plans

Currently, there is still a lot of buzz around the developer studio Blizzard. On the one hand, it became just a while ago that Activision-Blizzard will soon belong to Microsoft, and on the other hand, the studio announced a survival game set in a completely new world.

But now it became known that this survival game is not the only new project. Blizzard is currently looking for developers to participate in an as yet unannounced game. This is supposed to be a new game in a well-known Blizzard world, and it seems that the whole thing will be a real role-playing game.

Blizzard has not announced this to the public, but there is a job posting that gives quite a deep insight.

A real role-playing game for single and multiplayer?

Specifically, the job posting is about hiring a Lead Content Designer. That is, a leader who will deal with the specific content of the game and lead a team that creates that content.

Blizzard is currently already developing an action role-playing game for the PC - Diablo 4.

In particular, the person is to take on the task of designing mechanically and narratively interesting missions. However, it gets particularly exciting in the lower section of the job description. Here it is said that previous experience with role-playing games in any form is an advantage. In detail, Blizzard is looking for someone who …

  • … knows a lot about building worlds
  • … knows how to write stories for roleplaying games
  • … is able to develop single player missions, quests, stories, characters and events
  • … who has experience creating quests, landmarks, and characters in a shared world.
  • … who knows how to run a pen&paper role-playing game or live action RPGs (LARPs).

According to the appearance, Blizzard wants to deliver a real role-playing game here. Especially the fact that previous experience in the area of Pen&Paper or LARPs is an advantage is interesting. After all, these are the role-playing media in which we have the most control over our own characters.

The job description talks about both single player and a shared world. Either the new RPG is meant to cover both, or it’s still so early in the concept phase that they’re keeping different directions open.

Theoretically, it could also be another mobile game, but Blizzard usually states this fact even with unannounced projects. Like here, for example.

Is a new WarCraft or coming?

What’s interesting now is what the new role-playing game will be about. In one paragraph in the job posting it says:

Champion a clear vision for mechanically and narratively interesting missions within an established Blizzard brand.

This strongly suggests that there is no new universe to be seen, as with the just-announced survival game. Instead, the role-playing game will probably be set in an established universe. The only question is, which one? Since Overwatch 2 is still in development, we would rule out this brand for now. The same goes for Diablo, although at least the role-playing approach, the shared world and the question of experience in the pen & paper area could speak for it.

Actually, World of Warcraft is so successful that it doesn't need a successor. On the other hand, the MMO already has almost 20 years under its belt.

In the end, there are really only two brands left that really come into question here. And those are WarCraft or StarCraft. WarCraft in particular would certainly lend itself to further emphasizing its role-playing strengths. A WoW 2 would certainly be quite a house number. But StarCraft would also be conceivable. After all, there are only real-time strategy games and Peter doesn’t see a future for this genre at Blizzard:

Blizzard, why do you hate real-time strategy so much?

Blizzard, why do you hate real-time strategy so much?

So instead of letting the brand wither away completely, a genre change might be the only right way to go. Similar to what WarCraft once did.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. It should also be noted that Blizzard is still making negative headlines due to discrimination in the workplace and sexism allegations. Read all about the sexism lawsuit against Activision-Blizzard here.

How about you guys? Can you still look forward to new games from Blizzard? For which brand would you like to see a real role-playing game? Tell us in the comments!
