In the future, it will probably no longer be necessary to buy Blizzard games as full-price titles if you want to play them. Because Microsoft has announced on 1.9. to add games from Activision Blizzard to the Xbox Game Pass, their “Flatrate Gaming” subscription. They specifically mention Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty. So apparently the new games in the Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 series will end up in Game Pass. But what about World of Warcraft?
Here’s the situation:
- Microsoft made a takeover offer to Activision Blizzard in January 2022, which the board accepted. Some suspect that CEO Bobby Kotick wants to save his skin with the sale, because he was up to his neck in a sexism scandal.
- For the deal to go through, however, both companies need the okay from regulators around the world. There is a risk that Activision Blizzard and Microsoft will be so big that a dominant company will emerge and that will have a negative impact on the market. Sony has already criticized the deal
- Xbox has now explained in a post how they view the Activision Blizzard acquisition itself
Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty come to the Xbox Game Pass
That’s what Xbox says: In a post from Phil Spencer, the Xbox chief, on September 1 (via blogs.microsoft), it says:
Subscription services like Game Pass make gaming more affordable and they help gamers from around the world find their latest favorite game. Game Pass allows developers to bring more games to more players, not fewer games. We intend to make beloved games from Activision Blizzard’s library – including Overwatch, Diablo, and Call of Duty – available in GamePass and expand their gaming communities.

Are the games coming to Game Pass right at release?
What does that mean for gamers? Blizzard has two hot new titles in development right now, Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4. According to the statement, we can probably assume that the titles will end up in the Xbox Game Pass:
- With Overwatch, that’s for sure – because Overwatch can only mean Overwatch 2, since Overwatch 1 will be absorbed into the new game at Relase
- With Diablo, Spencer can actually also only mean that Diablo 4 is coming to Game Pass when it comes to expanding the “gaming community”. Diablo 3 and Diablo 2 Ressurected are also candidates for release in Xbox Game Pass
- Activision’s Call of Duty is also a candidate for Game Pass
For Blizzard fans, once Microsoft’s purchase goes through, there will likely be no need to necessarily buy these games individually. Instead, gamers will be able to pick up Xbox Game Pass, a sort of “flat-rate gaming.”
This should allow the games to reach a large target audience, as past experience has shown that gamers will look into many titles for free – even games that don’t actually belong to their favorite genre.
The question, however, is: Will Blizzard’s new games come to Game Pass on Day 1 or only after a few months delay?
What about WoW? There is no mention of the subscription-based MMORPG World of Warcraft by Spencer; that will apparently continue as before.
Be careful, don’t pay 10 € for the Xbox Game Pass just like that – I almost made the mistake
Xbox assures to continue offering games for all platforms
What else does the post say? The post is also kind of a “we’re not evil, believe us” post. That’s because Spencer profusely assures that there are no plans to withhold games from any platform. The games will continue to be released on consoles like the Playstation 5.
This is apparently to take the wind out of the sails of an objection from Sony, which had raised as an objection against the takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft: Call of Duty is such a unique game that an imbalance in the market could arise if Xbox takes over the game series.
Spencer asserts that they want to bring games to all gamers. This was proven with Minecraft.
Spencer even specifically singles out Sony and Tencent (LoL) as industry leaders.
Xboox had already reacted somewhat caustically to Sony’s objection:
Xbox caustic: Sony fears new Call of Duty coming to Game Pass for free on Day 1, destroying PS5’s dominance
