It has been known since December 2020 at the latest that Riot Games is working on an MMO in the League of Legends universe. Since then, the developer studio has been discreetly holding back with status updates, to put it kindly. In a worst-case scenario, the online role-playing game will even come not at all on the market.
Is Riot Games discontinuing the League of Legends MMO?
The information comes directly from Greg Street, who is in charge of the MMO project at Riot Games. He recently got in touch with a tweet, the content of which has left many a fan will certainly take notice. In it, he leaves open the option that the MMO might never see the light of day.
“There is no guarantee that the game will be released. We are optimistic, but you never know for sure until it actually does. If we do assume it does come out, it will be the fourth major franchise I’ve worked on (AoE, WoW, LoL) – and probably my last. I don’t have a problem with that. It will be a good final act.”
What could prevent the launch of the MMO?
Some LoL fans were visibly upset in light of these statements and were quick to ask if there was currently possibly problems with the development of the League of Legends MMO that would lead Street to make such a statement. In addition, they wanted to know what reasons there were for a Discontinuation of the project could give. Greg Street took the time to give an answer that sounds quite plausible.
“If it’s not going to be good. If we think it’s going to disappoint players. We don’t want to make a game that’s hyped for two weeks and then disappears from the scene. (…) Things are going very well. I’m just being honest, the standards for a Riots game are high, and that goes for player expectations as well. We’re not going to release a disappointing game.”

According to this, Greg Street’s tweets are not. as a warningbut rather as a honest statement to look at. Should the MMO in the universe of League of Legends (buy now 68,94 € ) does not meet internal expectations, Riot Games reserves the right not to publish it – even if the development has previously consumed a lot of money.
