By now we know quite well what to expect in the first – Season of the WoW Classic championship. There are supposed to be six phases again, over which the content of the vanilla era will be distributed. This time, however, the cycle is supposed to be completed after twelve months (with two months per phase). And in order for that to be feasible at all, the developers promise faster progress:
- thanks to XP buffs for quests
- Honor system and battlegrounds from phase 1
- more mining and herbal sources
- assistance in opening Ahn’Qiraj if needed
In addition, it is clear that the raid instances should become crisper, through
- World buff ban in raid instances
- increased health for bosses
- Restoration of mechanics removed from some raid bosses
Somewhat mitigated because the limit on debuff effects on bosses should also disappear.

Sno and Zirene about – Season of the championship
In the new installment of the Prepared podcast, Classic fans/streamers/youtubers Sno and Zirene talked about all of the above and came to the following conclusions:
- Changes definitely need to be made to the Rank 14 grind, otherwise players who are keen on the top PvP ranks will miss one, two, or even three entire phases for their guilds because they have to squat on battlegrounds 24/7.
- With these changes, you realize again that Holy Longdale was responsible for Everquest’s Nostalgia servers for a long time. Much of what is happening with WoW Classic and the Championship – Season has been and is happening on the Everquest Classic servers.
- As with Everquest, this now seems like an attempt to milk the cow for as long as it can. In theory, you can now repeat this 12-month cycle over and over again. Fewer and fewer players come on board with each cycle, but enough to generate worthwhile revenue over the next few years with little effort.
- Zirene criticizes Blizzard for changing too little with the championship – Season , bringing too little new. Bosses with more health points are not the solution. This is recycling. It would be better to change/add mechanics or implement new raid instances that were planned for the vanilla version at the time.
- In addition, he complains that the raid ban on world buffs will remove an important layer from WoW Classic, which only in itself declares “Classic Fresh” stillborn. A lot of people are up for rocking the Classic raids buffed and prepared like this. One option would be to offer one world buff server per region.
- Sno also complains that there is not enough new stuff on the new Classic servers to actually attract many players. On the Everquest servers, the leveling phase is so long that players use new cycles to play another class extensively. In WoW Classic, however, you could get all the classes you wanted to 60 pretty quickly – thanks to boosting. There is simply a lack of incentives.
- The timing is odd, as Classic Fresh and TBC Classic will cannibalize each other. The championship – Season would be more something for after WotLK Classic.
This is what Karsten thinks about – Season of Championship
I don’t think – Season of the Championship and TBC Classic will cannibalize each other. At least I don’t know anyone who is torn now because they desperately want to play both versions but can’t. On the one hand, many TBC Classic players log in almost only for the raid dates and the one or other farm round anyway, and on the other hand, the Championship – Season simply lacks attractive arguments.
Honestly, just because the Classic bosses have more health and we’re supposed to challenge them without World Buffs, I’m not going to play a level 60 character again. Blizzard would have to offer a lot more to entice me back into the Classic world. For example, a completely new class balancing, a noticeably improved item design, thanks to which, for example, all animal sets can be used sensibly. And a PvP system with conquest points and arenas as well as rated battlegrounds. And yes, some completely new end-game content would also be a reason for me to play Championship – Season .
My take: Championship – Season will certainly not match the success of WoW (buy now ) Repeat Classic or lure a noticeable amount of players from the TBC Classic servers. This is an Everquest Classic-style – Season al service that costs little effort, will sell a subscription or two, and otherwise runs alongside. I wonder if anything will change in subsequent cycles? Well, that depends on the courage and willingness of those in charge at Activision Blizzard. However, I strongly doubt that Blizzard will invest the necessary developer sweat in the – Season s to create an exciting project WoW Classic 2.0.
What do you guys think about this? Are fresh Classic servers interesting for you? And what would Blizzard have to do to get you to revisit the original Azeroth? Tell us in the comments!
