The Battle Weekend is now underway in Pokémon GO, and Giovanni has added Crypto-Latios to his team. We at MeinMMO took a look at what kind of Pokémon this is and whether it’s even worth it.
What kind of Pokémon are we talking about? Pokémon GO is currently running the Battle Weekend, where you can meet Team GO Rocket more often. A new special research also gives you access to a Super Rocket radar, which you can also use to meet the leader Giovanni.
For the battle, the members of Team GO Rocket also got themselves a new Crypto or two. First and foremost is Giovanni, who now has a legendary Crypto Latios on his team. But what kind of Pokémon is it and is it worth it for you?
We have summarized all the important information about Latios for you.
What kind of Pokémon is Latios?
Latios is a legendary Pokémon from the 3rd generation and the counterpart to the Pokémon Latias. It belongs to the Dragon and Psycho Pokémon and has no evolutions or advancements. Only from a temporary mega evolution can benefit the legendary monster.
Until now, you could find Latios from time to time in the Level 5 Raids or, more recently, following the corresponding Mega Raid. Now, for the first time, it will also be available in its crypto variant in the game.
Are there Shiny Latios? Yes, the legendary Pokémon also has a shiny form. You can recognize it by its green body. According to current information, however, the Crypto variant will not be catchable as Shiny for the time being.

How strong is Latios? Latios scores mainly with a high attack value, but its stamina and defense are also solid. Its charge attack Psychokinesis is really strong and causes a lot of damage to the opponent, which is why it is one of the best Psycho attackers.
With its moveset of Fire Ember and Dragon Claw, it also qualifies among the top 10 Dragon attackers. And the legendary Pokémon also excels in the Master League.
Is Crypto-Latios worth it?
Latios is already one of the best attackers in Pokémon GO in its normal form, making it ideally suited for use in Raids. The Crypto form increases its attack value by another 20%. For this reason, you should not disregard Crypto Latios, especially as a Psycho attacker, for PvE battles.
In PvP battles, on the other hand, it is only useful in the Master League. There, it even reaches 23rd place in the PvPoke ranking with a moveset of Fire Ember, Dragon Claw, and Spotlight. However, if you are still looking for a strong Pokémon for the Super League or Hyper League, Latios is not the right choice and you should rather look for a better alternative.
Should you catch Crypto Latios? If you want to secure a strong attacker for the raid battles, you should definitely get Crypto-Latios into your team. Even though it can’t get past its competitor Mewtu, it’s still a good alternative for this.
In the GO Battle League, however, Crypto-Latios is only used in the Master League. And even here you can find some dragons that are a bit better, like Zekrom or Reshiram. In the Super and Hyper leagues, on the other hand, it doesn’t play any role at all.
Additionally, you have to keep in mind that Crypto-Latios doesn’t exist as Shiny yet, which makes it a bit less interesting. On top of that, you only get one Super Rocket Radar, so you only get one chance at Crypto-Latios for now.
So if you don’t need Crypto-Latios for use in Raids and have no use for the Legendary Pokémon, consider saving your Super Rocket Radar for another monster.
How to get Crypto-Latios?
To secure a Crypto-Latios, you first need a Super Rocket Radar. If you don’t have one from previous research, you can secure one via the new special research for Battle Weekend.
Once you have a Super Rocket Radar, you can go in search of Giovanni. So activate the radar and click the icon on the right edge of the game. Now you will be shown a map of the surroundings, where possible locations of Giovanni are marked. But beware, this could also be a bully who is just trying to deceive you.
When you finally find Giovanni, all you have to do is fight him and defeat him. As a reward, you will now receive an encounter with Crypto-Latios. Now all you have to do is catch it.
