If you have the same team color as your friends, you can flatten arenas together and get more balls in raids. But if you have chosen the wrong team, you are still punished, because it is not possible to change teams.

Again and again, players demand a team change so that they can flatten arenas together with friends. But what is Niantic planning there? Is there possibly a change in the process?

That’s why a team change would be good

Team change brings advantages: Those who unsuspectingly chose a team at the beginning may now have numerous disadvantages.

In many places, one or two team colors dominate and for the last color, it’s hard to capture and hold an arena. If you are alone in arenas, then it is significantly easier to get kicked out as well. More players in an arena is more of a deterrent.

Also, the losing team color gets fewer balls in raids. For example, if Team Red and Team Blue did the most damage in Raids, Team Yellow will be left with particularly few balls. Catching a Pokémon then becomes much more difficult.

Players demand that: Search interest on Google has been persistently high over the past 12 months. Again and again players search for whether it is possible to change the team.

On Reddit, too, players keep asking about this possibility. Unfortunately, the answer is always “No, it’s not possible”.

This is what Niantic says about the demands

Here’s how Niantic responds: The developers are well aware that this issue is in the minds of players. Already in the summer of 2018, Niantic commented on the claims and changed a text on their official website.

There it says: “Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to change your team. We plan to add this feature to Pokémon GO in the future. We are working on a few other big features first. Therefore, there is currently no estimate of when swapping teams will be possible.”

Now this is new: A few days ago, Niantic employee Liz George was asked if a team change is possible in the future with, “That’s something that’s on the schedule, and we’ll share that information about it with you as soon as we can. 2018 was a busy year and 2019 will be as well.”
