WhatsApp advertises that all messages sent via the app can only be read by you and the recipient. But there is an exceptional case in which the messenger reads.
- WhatsApp can read messages when you report a post.
- This affects the last five messages in a chat.
- According to Messenger, this does not violate end-to-end encryption.
Due to its affiliation with the Facebook group, WhatsApp’s data protection is often viewed critically. In such cases, the messenger likes to refer to the end-to-end encryption that is activated for your conversations ex works, unlike Telegram.
Through it, messages sent via the messenger should only be able to be read by you and the recipient. Even WhatsApp itself cannot access the chats, it is always said. But a report by the non-profit organization ProPublica casts doubt on this.
Thousands of employees to check reported messages
Among other things, ProPublica claims to have learned from conversations with former employees that WhatsApp maintains more than 1,000 employees in Dublin, Austin (Texas) and Singapore who investigate the content of reported WhatsApp messages.
The messenger has since confirmed that it can read the last five messages in a chat when a post is reported. However, WhatsApp contradicts the representation that this would violate end-to-end encryption.
Encryption cannot be undone
In fact, WhatsApp cannot remove the encryption, rather reporting posts works like forwarding a WhatsApp message. This opens a new encrypted chat with WhatsApp, the messenger explained to 9to5Mac.
In a statement to Netzwelt, Messenger said that in its view, this practice was in line with end-to-end encryption.
WhatsApp provides a way for people to report spam or abuse, which includes sharing the most recent messages in a chat. This feature is important for preventing the worst abuse on the internet. We strongly disagree with the notion that accepting reports a user chooses to send us is incompatible with end-to-end encryption.
In the FAQ of WhatsApp, there is now also the note that messages are forwarded to WhatsApp. Specifically, it says there:
When you report someone, here’s what happens: WhatsApp receives the latest messages you’ve received from the reported user or group, as well as information about your most recent interactions with that user or group.
FAQ WhatsApp
In fact, WhatsApp also indicates this with a pop-up when reporting a post. This was reported to the blog WA Beta Info according to that also again rearranged, so that it becomes clear that the last five messages are forwarded.
However, cloud backups remain a weak point in end-to-end encryption. Neither iCloud nor Google Drive currently offer end-to-end encryption. However, a possibility to encrypt them has already appeared in a beta version of Messenger.
