In the eyes of many WoW fans would be the Caller of the Dracthyr a class, which could do three jobs, namely tanking, healing, and dealing damage. However, the new class comes with WoW: Dragonflight only with two specializations for now: Healer and DpSer. A specialization for tanks is not categorically ruled out for the future, and as came around in WoWHead’s group interview with game director Ion Hazzikostas, future classes could also offer protection specialization. But his answer reveals a problem that could prevent a big wave of new tanks in the MMORPG: Players and the fear of taking charge in instanced content.
Fear of failure of neutanks
“Even looking back historically, I don’t know if the number of tanks has massively increased due to the existence of demon hunters. A lot of tanks may have changed specs or classes because they liked the mobility or the toolkit compared to other tanks,” Hazzikostas said. But putting yourself on the front line as a tank also requires players to have the mindset. “But it’s more of a mindset of taking responsibility for survival, for positioning, for leading a group through a dungeon, and yes, that can be a very high hurdle.”
WoW: The top 0.1% of Mythic Plus players rely on these classes!
What the WoW makers need for the future and a good end-game role balance is, again for a new class, tank gameplay that will make newcomers to the protection business curious. “We’re paying attention to tank gameplay itself and what we’re asking of tanks in terms of our boss designs, especially in dungeons, how much you use active damage mitigation, how much positioning matters, and how many other things you can do wrong as a tank. We already expect a lot from you. Whereas in raid encounters you might not move as much as a tank and focus on active damage mitigation and managing the boss and your own health, we’re probably not going to ask you to do as much there.”
At the end of the day, no WoW end-gamers have an easy job. Tanks have just as much to do as healers, who have to ensure the survival of tanks and everyone else, while DpSers have to drive enough damage to make the enemy smooch the ground. The mental threshold from DpSer to healer and then from healer to tank is insurmountable, however, especially when teammates are not forgiving of mistakes. But … what kind of tanks could there be in the future?
Neruber, Naga, Klamauk?
It’s a question that WoW fan House123049 has also asked – and partially answered himself – on Reddit. What tank classes might the future of WoW offer? “A Nerubian crypt lord that brings beetles, ground spikes, and a prickly tank, as well as the ability to burrow,” House suggests. “A Naga sea witch that uses bows and lightning magic as a ranged tank. A court jester class based on the Darkmoon Faire that functions similarly to the Mesmer from Guild Wars 2, and uses poisons like mind magic, creates clones of itself – but can’t vanish, “because I think that goes with the rogues and the feral druids.” House also picks up on the idea of the Tinker in a mech suit and the Bard as a Supporter, as well as a class based on sand.
In addition to the Darkmoon Court Jester (who, by the way, could also have ties to the powers of the Old Gods, similar to the Shadow Priest, just sayin), a sand class also sounds interesting. “Think of a combination of Aladdin, Gaara from Naruto, and Ekko from League of Legends. Surfs on sand, uses daggers and swords, also uses time magic. Can dive into battle riding a wave of sand, slash the enemy, bury him in a sand coffin as a finisher, then turn back time to get out. Obviously inspired by the Bronze Dragonflight.”
How does it look to you guys? Is there a class idea that you find interesting enough to possibly give tanking a shot, if you haven’t already? Or do you not see tanking as an element of World of Warcraft for you? (buy now ) that you want to master? Or the other way around: Are you a tank through and through?
