The Assault Rifle 44 (also known as STG-44 or MP44 in some games) is the most common assault rifle in Call of Duty history. It appeared in every Call of Duty set in World War 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. This makes it the second most-used weapon from Call of Duty, with only the M1911 appearing in two more games.
Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive
Campaign
The StG 44 is rare, but quite useful from melee to ranged combat with its magazine consisting of 30 bullets.
It is very lethal in the campaign, but in United Offensive its performance deteriorates as the distance increases. It is extremely accurate and can kill with three to four bullets, plus it has a short reload animation compared to other weapons. However, ammo is very scarce and the weapon only becomes more frequent towards the end of the campaign. Compared to the MP40, the recoil is quite high.
Multiplayer
The StG 44 is extremely flexible in multiplayer. In close combat, it exhibits good precision and power. Especially in Call of Duty multiplayer, a popular strategy is to find a high point, switch the weapon to semi-auto and shoot at any target that shows up. This causes a lot of enemies to fall because in Call of Duty, damage doesn’t decrease with range yet, meaning you can take down enemies all over the map. In United Offensive, you already have to consider the damage drop. If you shoot the weapon fully automatically, the recoil easily distracts you from the target, which means you have to fire either in volleys or single shots if you want to stay on target from a distance.
Call of Duty 2
Campaign
The StG-44 is still rare in the campaign, but without question absolutely deadly from any
distance. Most of the features have been kept from the predecessor, but the recoil has been increased to the level of an MP40. Therefore, you should never fire more than five bullets in a row.
Multiplayer
The weapon is a bit weaker than its predecessors, but still an absolute killer. Due to the low recoil and the fact that the gun has 30 bullets in the magazine and only needs three hits to kill, you can easily eliminate ten enemies before you have to reload.
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One
The StG-44 is often used by German soldiers alongside the Kar98k and the MG34. It is a very powerful weapon with almost zero recoils and is therefore excellent as a replacement for the Thompson. In multiplayer it is the assault rifle of the Germans and the Italians.
Call of Duty 3
Campaign
The StG-44 is extremely rare until you reach the 12th mission, Corridor of Death.
It’s just excellent compared to the other weapons because it kills any enemy with just one hit above the hip. However, the ammunition is limited, so you should place your shots precisely.
Multiplayer
The StG-44 is part of the heavy assault class of the Germans. It is powerful and fairly accurate, with average recoil. From further distances, you should fire in volleys. However, from short to medium distances you can fire fully automatic without hesitation because there the recoil almost does not bother you at all. The weapon reloads slower than the Thompson or MP40, so it is just as fast as the BAR, but still, not too much time passes on the battlefield.
Call of Duty: Roads to Victory
In the later part of the Canadian campaign, the StG-44 appears more and more often in the hands of German soldiers. In the British campaign, it takes over the main role of the MP40. Although the weapon is fully automatic, computer-controlled soldiers shoot single shots with it. The weapon is extremely useful because it can take out any enemy with one hit above the waist, just like the BAR.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The StG-44 looks exactly like the version from Call of Duty 2, as it uses the same model.
The recoil is slightly higher than in Call of Duty 2, but still not as high as in some of the other old games. Both the damage and accuracy of the STG-44 are quite high, and it’s the only automatic assault rifle in the game that doesn’t swing around. However, the weapon’s rate of fire is low. This can be compensated for by double firing. In the Wii version, the StG-44 reloads differently and its noise when doing so resembles that of a W1200.
Multiplayer
There are no attachments for the StG-44 in multiplayer. It also has high recoil, a low rate of fire and an obscure sight (which PC players can turn off). These drawbacks and the fact that you unlock the StG-44 late make it rarely appear on the battlefield. Some use it only to get the golden AK-47.
Despite everything, the StG-44 also has its positive aspects. It has no momentum at all after firing, high damage and a reload animation that lasts only 1.75 seconds. If you’re already used to the sights from Call of Duty 2, you can easily overlook this fact as well. To compensate for the high recoil, you can simply fire in volleys from a distance.
In the third-person view, the StG-44 makes an obsolete noise when firing, which should make attentive players recognize it right away. In the first-person view, you basically can’t tell any difference between the AK-47. The StG-44 and the AK-47 also have a similar reloading animation, only the magazine is retrieved differently from the weapon and the safety is on different sides.
Call of Duty: World at War
Campaign
The StG-44 (so named for the first time in this game) is a useful weapon in the campaign.
Thanks to its low recoil and narrow rate of fire, it is effective at any range. The weapon is not common until you reach the levels Ring of Steel, Heart of the Empire, and Downfall. This could be because the assault rifle wasn’t even produced until 1943, so the war was almost over. When you normally find it, it’s not exactly overloaded with ammo, but in the later missions, more soldiers use it, so ammo isn’t much of a problem anymore.
Multiplayer
The STG-44 is unlocked at level 37. Its only average damage and low rate of fire have made it a disappointment for many players, but you should keep in mind that it has low recoil and is easy to control. Since it is quite accurate, it can be used perfectly from the medium range, so you can give it a try if you value precision more than strength. In Hardcore game modes, the weapon is popular for the reasons just mentioned and usually kills with one shot from almost any distance. Outside of hardcore game modes, the STG-44 is unfortunately not particularly effective in close combat. A steady hand paired with double fire can make up for this somewhat, but still, a player with an STG-44 is clearly inferior to a player with a submachine gun in close combat.
Survival Combat
The STG-44 is available on all maps in Survival Combat, either on the mystery crate or on the wall. It is a viable weapon, however, you should aim for the head at all times because it doesn’t do as much damage when shot in the chest. In higher rounds, you can quickly run out of ammo and you should trade it for a better weapon anyway unless you always stay in a place where you can buy ammo from the wall. From turn 15 to turn 17, you should think about getting rid of or upgrading your STG-44. Because already from round 8 you need several hits to take out a zombie.
On the map The Giant you can punch the STG-44, whereupon its new name is “Sparrow-447+”. Although the magazine capacity and reserve ammo are almost doubled, you still use too much ammo. However, the rate of fire and strength are also improved, making the STG-44 one of the best pack-a-punch weapons of this era. The higher rate of fire provides greater recoil, which in turn provides more headshots and helps when you need to eliminate entire lines of zombies.
Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts.
The assault rifle 44 is not as common as the Wehrmacht’s submachine gun, the MP40.
It has the same characteristics as its predecessor from World at War. It only appears in a single mission anyway, where it serves as a good backup in ranged combat. Basically, it’s the German equivalent of the BAR, since both do the same amount of damage and have recoil, but the STG-44 has a larger magazine capacity and is therefore more useful when you encounter a larger group of enemies.
Call of Duty: World at War (DS).
The STG-44 has 30 bullets in the magazine, low recoil and high penetrating power, making it an excellent weapon for ranged and medium distance combat. It appears only in the later missions of the British and Russian campaigns.
In multiplayer, it can only be used by the Germans and keeps its high damage and low recoil.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
The STG-44 appears as a usable weapon in the Project Nova mission.
Like most of the weapons from this mission, the STG-44 has been modified a bit for this, for example, snow has been placed on the model. Dead enemies drop the weapon and it has a similar reload animation as back in World at War. However, it has the fire sound of the RPK, no recoil at all on the outside, more power, and even has the ability to sever the body parts of enemies in the uncensored version. It also appears in the classic maps in Survival, but without any changes there.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
On the Origins zombie map, you can buy the STG-44 on the wall,
in the church above the tank station, in the excavation site under the Pack-a-Punch machine and in the Crazy Place. It is somewhat different from its numerous predecessors, for the most part the reload animation has been changed and it has become more expensive on the wall. In the earlier games it did enormous damage, however the rate of fire was rather choppy, now its damage has been reduced to that of the AN-94 and Galil, but the rate of fire has been increased. Despite these changes, the STG-44 retains its low recoil and enormous range.

Call of Duty
The Call of Duty series has existed since 2003 and in addition to various spin-offs, including for the handheld systems Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, 14 major titles of the series have now been released. Ever since the first part of the series, great emphasis has been placed on the online multiplayer mode in addition to the single-player campaign, which is also reflected in the development of the shooter series. Since the first Call of Duty, World at War, which was developed exclusively by Treyarch, each part also included cooperative challenges that you could play together with friends. The latest installment, Call of Duty: World War II, also features an extended multiplayer mode that puts you and your friends in the combat zones and famous battles of World War II. Using the divisions, you’ll be able to choose between the deadly sniper and the brute armored division and support your comrades in battle. In addition, World War II also has a zombie mode “Nazi Zombies”, as in its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops. Face the monsters of the Third Reich and win glory and honor.
