Warzone installation too big for more maps

We all love Warzone, don’t we? Sure we do, it’s a really good Battle Royale after all, which has introduced some interesting new mechanics especially with Gulag. But what are we actually playing on in Warzone? We’ve always had two maps in the game at the same time. it was Verdansk and Rebirth Island, then Verdansk was sent back in time and finally replaced by Caldera. But why are there only two maps in the game at a time? Apex Legends, for example, has a full four large Battle Royale maps and another five smaller ones for Arena mode. In a recent interview with the streamer TeeP, a Warzone developer has now given an answer.

Warzone needs too much memory

In the interview with TeeP, Live Operations Lead Josh Bridge talked about why they can’t implement more maps at once in Warzone. TeeP asked Bridge if they were planning to introduce a map rotation with multiple maps. Sort of the same as in Apex Legends. Bridge replied:

“We want that. We all want that, there’s a technical problem: the install and reinstall sizes are f**king crazy.”

He said that they would really like to add more maps to the game, but there are technical problems. The install size of Warzone is just way too big. Warzone already requires more than 120 GB of storage on the PlayStation 5 and 80 GB on the PC. According to the developer, this is a big problem, as each update pushes the required storage further up. And this bothers many players so much that more and more are turning their backs on Warzone. If you already have half the hard drive full with just one game, you think twice if the game is worth it…

Why does Warzone need so much memory?

Why is the install size in Warzone such a big issue, you may be wondering. Well, Warzone was originally developed as part of Modern Warfare 2019 and was never supposed to be this big. The game was developed using Modern Warfare’s engine, which means that all the assets in Warzone were meant for the much smaller multiplayer maps in Modern Warfare. Verdansk wasn’t developed at the time with the intention of having more than 180 weapons integrated into the game by now, let alone full Call of Duty titles. After Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, we now have three full multiplayer games in Warzone, which inevitably pushes the limits of the Modern Warfare engine.

Another map the size of Caldera would probably blow our hard drives and make even more players give up on Warzone. So as sad as it may sound, we will probably never have more than two maps at a time in Warzone. But at least the maps will be regularly updated with new POIs or even completely reworked. Like what happened with Verdansk when it became Verdansk ’84 or what happened now when Rebirth Island became Rebirth Reinforced.
