Vanguard: What is the new Call of Duty about anyway?

The Setting: The setting of Vanguard is set in the Second World War. The new Call of Duty is historically inspired, but doesn’t use any real events or characters from that era. It is also not set in an alternate reality like Wolfenstein, as many initially assumed.

What is it about? In short, the story of Vanguard revolves around the origins of military special forces as we know them today. These have their roots in the Second World War and that’s exactly where the new CoD starts. While you experience the creation of such a unit in the campaign, you can then play members of the first special units in multiplayer.

Vanguard: This content offers the new Call of Duty at release

The latest spin-off of the popular “Call of Duty” series basically has something in store for every CoD fan. There is a single-player campaign for story fans, an extensive, traditional multiplayer part – the heart of every “Call of Duty” title – and zombies fans will also get their money’s worth.

Singleplayer: The single player campaign focuses on the story behind the said creation of the special forces. Players experience the whole thing from the perspective of individual servicemen and women who, as a motley, international squad called “Task Force One”, fight their way across the most notable battlefields of World War II to Berlin. There they are to sabotage a secret Nazi project that is crucial to the war effort.

Multiplayer: The centerpiece of the new Call of Duty comes with a whopping 20 multiplayer maps as well as 7 modes (core and hardcore) right at release. This makes Vanguard the biggest Call of Duty in the last 10 years in terms of multiplayer. For a better classification: Black Ops Cold War started with a total of 8 maps at release. By the way, 16 of these maps from Vanguard are 6vs6 core maps. The other 4 are designed for a smaller format.

Zombies: Fans of the popular zombie mode are also served in Vanguard. Here, the studio Treyarch, known for particularly cool zombie experiences, had its fingers in the pie and so players are served a prologue to the story of zombies from Black Ops Cold War, so to speak. Traditionally, the co-op mode is once again about withstanding an overwhelming onslaught of the undead for as long as possible. The undead story from Vanguard is linked to the zombie storyline from Cold War.

This is completely new: There are some cool, fresh elements to the multiplayer that allow for new, tactical gameplay. For example, the popular Gunsmith feature from Modern Warfare returns, but now has more options in store – including custom ballistics and different ammo types and calibers.

In addition, Vanguard offers reactive environments on its maps. This allows numerous objects on the maps to be destroyed, revealing new lines of sight or even new passages. This gives you completely new ways to play, no two matches are the same. The level of destruction doesn’t reach the Battlefield series, but it surpasses everything that CoD has had so far.

Also new in multiplayer are the so-called Combat Pacings – a kind of selectable filter or preset that lets you decide how you want to experience Vanguard in multiplayer.

  • Blitz: Here you can expect a heavily casual-heavy, entertaining experience with up to 24vs24 players on large maps. So you’ll always encounter a never-ending and highest possible number of enemies, there are hardly any limits. In short: pure chaos and non-stop action await you here.
  • Tactical: In principle, the complete opposite of Blitz. You encounter enemies noticeably less often. Battles are much more tactical, everything is deadlier, every shot counts. Great similarities with the Hardcore experience.
  • Standard: The normal Call of Duty multiplayer experience in 6vs6 format as you know it so far.

Vanguard: What does the new Call of Duty bring to Warzone?

Here’s what’s coming for Warzone with Vanguard: Warzone famously acts as a sort of link between Call of Duty’s annual major releases, already tying together Modern Warfare 2019 and Black Ops Cold War. And with Vanguard’s upcoming integration into on December 2, a third major title is coming soon.

Vanguard has quite a bit in store for Warzone in the process (starting December 2):

  • A new name. Warzone will change its name and will be called “Warzone Pacific” from then on.
  • The new big Pacific map “Caldera
  • A revised version of Rebirth Island, the smaller map from Warzone
  • Vanguard Royale and new war technology. In a separate playlist with different modes especially for Vanguard content, you’ll also be able to engage in dogfights (dogfights) with airplanes or operate anti-aircraft guns. Here you’ll only be able to use the Vanguard arsenal. However, there are no restrictions on the choice of operators.
  • Standard Battle Royale. Here you can use over 150 weapons from Modern Warfare, Cold War and Vanguard. In addition, the previous “original” vehicles from Warzone are still on the road here.
  • the new anti-cheat system RICOCHET from Vanguard now also starts its work in Warzone
  • Warzone will then be switched to the engine from Vanguard – a more advanced version of the engine from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Currently, the battle royale is still using the MW engine from 2019. This means that there will not only be a graphics , but the gameplay will also be brought up to date, for example, with adapted movements or new options for weapon handling (blind firing overhead from cover or a freer laying of weapons).
  • Even before December 2, there will be in-game events to prepare for and then usher in the Verdansk map’s departure from Warzone.

Warzone: Vanguard Royale will also feature combat with airplanes and anti-aircraft guns.
